Lena Dunham Quotes Every 20-Something Should Live By
Burlexe

For the average 20-something, it is difficult to find a single characteristic that makes you even somewhat comparable to your favorite celebrities. They seem to have it all while you are still struggling to figure out how you are supposed to make something of yourself at such a young age. Personally, I would never have considered someone I've never met to be my role model, that is, until I started following writer Lena Dunham. Through getting to know her writing style and following her work, I've found myself struck with awe and completely inspired to better my own self for my future career and well, my personal life too. Here are a few of my favorite Lena Dunham quotes that I find to be hilarious, heartwarming, potentially life-changing and overall spot on for this stage of my life.

“I would be a horrible girlfriend at this point in my life, because I’m both needy and unavailable.”

If there's a single sentence I would consider using to describe my entire life at this exact moment, it would be this one.

"I've never counted beverages as calories and I'm not about to start now."

This quote is how I justify my hundreds of calories spent on booze alone every weekend.

"A cool part of growing up has been realizing I kissed more nice boys than I thought."

Just because you haven't found the one yet, doesn't mean you've been kissing frogs all along. Sometimes you can be with someone who seems "perfect", but maybe they just weren't THE perfect one for you.

"Instead of apologizing to people from your past, put that energy into those in your present."

You can't spend the rest of your life dwelling on something that happened in your past and letting it consume you. Pick up and move on.

"Never forget that Britney Spears proposed to Kevin Federline, so YES, women really can do anything."

Traditional values are changing, men are no longer superior to all and its time for all women to believe it and believe in themselves.

“I have the nagging sense that my true friends are waiting for me beyond college, unusual women whose ambitions are as big as their past transgressions, whose hair is piled high, dramatic like topiaries at Versailles, and who never, ever say ’too much information’ when you mention a sex dream you had about your father.”

Your people are out there, sometimes it just takes a little longer to find them.

“I am thinking particularly of a shower I took where the lower half of my body was under the running water and the upper half was laid out on the bath mat, eating a loaf of bread.”

Its okay to not have it all together 100% of the time.

“When someone shows you how little you mean to them and you keep coming back for more, before you know it you start to mean less to yourself. You are not made up of compartments! You are one whole person! What gets said to you gets said to all of you, ditto what gets done. Being treated like shit is not an amusing game or a transgressive intellectual experiment. It’s something you accept, condone, and learn to believe you deserve. This is so simple. But I tried so hard to make it complicated.”

Believe in yourself and believe that you deserve more from people.

“It's not brave to do something that doesn't scare you.”

Push yourself, take risks and accept that you're going to fall down sometimes…only to get back up and be stronger than you were before.

“The end never comes when you think it will. It's always ten steps past the worst moment, then a weird turn to the left.”

Tough times in life have to end at some point, it may not always be when you think it will, but things are always, always bound to get better.

“There is nothing gutsier to me than a person announcing that their story is one that deserves to be told, especially if that person is a woman.”

*DROPS MIC*

“Respect isn’t something you command through intimidation and intellectual bullying. It’s something you build through a long life of treating people how you want to be treated”

To be able to learn and fully understand at this age that the golden rule actually IS the golden and most important rule in life is the most impressive thing you could do.

“I think if you feel like you were born to write, then you probably were.”

Thanks, Lena for summing up how I've felt my entire life.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
