If you live in Lancaster, New York, you'll know immediately what I'm writing about this week. I'm talking about the windows in downtown Lancaster. For those of you not familiar with this, downtown Lancaster is decorated with lights and feels so festive during this time of year. And one of my favorite parts of this are the window displays.
The window displays in Lancaster are one of a kind. The displays came from AM&A's. Adam, Meldrum & Anderson Company (AM&A's) was a chain of department stores based in Buffalo, New York. It was an institution to generations of shoppers in the Buffalo area. The company was founded in 1867, and remained family owned until its sale to The Bon-Ton in 1995.
One big thing people remember about the AM&A stores was their window displays around Christmastime. After they closed, the displays got a little lost in time, and in 2006, after being in storage for 25 years, Lancaster started putting these displays in the windows downtown. They depict the story of The Night Before Christmas and some other usual winter scenes.
Some of my favorite holiday memories include walking around downtown with my family during the holiday season and reading through the story and just enjoying the decorations. If you have the time this week, come to downtown Lancaster and admire the displays.
