An Open letter to the Class of 2017

One of the realities that I know and have kept to myself is that when I graduate next year, I likely will not be in South Carolina again for some time. This is a subject that I do not like to discuss. This statement is in here to explain why in some cases, I may never see some of these wonderful seniors again. With that said, on to my letter.

When I first arrived here in the Fall of 2014, I knew very few people. One of the groups that “adopted” me were a group of sophomores, and I have many friends in the year ahead of me. You all helped me through various situations and shared both cries and laughs with me.

Seriously, your support really helped me get through days and made me realize that my academics were not as bad as I thought they were. Hanging out with the bio majors really taught me to count my blessings, as well providing a chance to vent about my studies. You all gave me tips and comradery, as well as people to hang out with outside of the classroom. For some of you, we sat in classes together, and worked on projects, including capstone.

Furthermore, you all set a great example, and did not let me go wild. You all helped me become more of an extrovert and meet more people which helped me build friendships that I hope will last a lifetime. I hope and pray that we will cross paths again throughout our respective lives, as this Class contains some of my dearest friends.

It is now hitting me (and right in the gut) that I may never see many of my senior friends again after two weeks. Keeping in contact is great, but actually visiting one another is even greater. Every year, I grow attached to one or two seniors in the spring semester of their senior year, I call this a mistake, but it really is a blessing. The mistake is me not being able to meet the individual earlier.

Sadly or gladly, the class of 2017 have only two weeks left in their undergraduate careers. Your futures are very bright, ad continue to wow me with all of your achievements. Go forth and do good in the world, as I know you will. Thank you for everything, and God bless. It has truly been a pleasure, and I hope to fill your shoes.

P.S. Some of my friends are Seniors at other colleges, you all provided me support as well, it would be rude to exclude you as well in my letter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
