Studies have shown that less than 10 percent of the world population is dominant on the left side of their bodies. Being a lefty has always been difficult to deal with throughout history in comparison to right-handed people. In the past, being left-handed was often frowned upon, meaning left-handed people were forced to do daily activities with the right side of their bodies.
I am a proud lefty. Growing up left-handed has always made me feel unique. As a child, I was rarely in a room with more than three people who were also dominant on their left side, and I kind of liked that. However, on most days, I did encounter things that caused me to struggle through a few daily activities. Here are some things that left-handed people must go through each day:
1. Always having to scope out each classroom for one of these desks before anyone else gets to it.
Because trying to take notes on a right-handed desk is way too uncomfortable.
2. Sitting next to someone who is not left-handed.
You always end up bumping elbows with non-lefties. It's bound to happen.
3. The aftermath of writing.
Ask any lefty if they have ever experienced this after writing down anything on a piece of paper. We have all been there, and it almost seems impossible to write anything without getting even the slightest bit of marks on your hand.
4. Credit card swipes.
If only some places had one or two check out aisles where they had credit card swipes on the left side. And don't even get me started on having to write signatures on these machines.
5. Using different check marks than everyone else.
6. Notebooks and binders.
We left-handed people always have such a tough time writing in notebooks and binders. The spiral always gets in the way of everything and makes it almost painful to try to write on top of.
7. Getting asked if you are left-handed every time someone sees you write.
Because hearing, "Have you always been a lefty?" or "I didn't know you were left-handed!" is always fun, right?
8. Having to look for left-handed scissors because regular scissors are not our friend.
They are our "special scissors."
9. Can openers.
The most common can openers are made for right-handed people, which makes it extremely difficult for lefties to successfully use. Looking for a lefty can opener is also a challenge at the grocery store.
All-in-all, going through these struggles can be annoying at times for us, but hey, at least left-handed people think with the right mind!
