The team isn’t that bad, considering the loss of Carmelo Anthony in the offseason. They are playing like it, though.
Through the first three NBA games, the Knicks have averaged 93 points per game. They are last in the league in this category.
Courtney Lee and Tim Hardaway Jr. have both spoke out about the climate of the team following their loss to the Celtics last Tuesday.
Lee told reporters that many of his teammates haven’t been paying attention in practice. Hardaway backed his claim. “We’re all out there running like we don’t know what’s going on,” Hardaway said. “It can’t happen,” he added.
The Knicks are now 0-3 to start the season. Sophomore Power Forward Kristaps Porzingis has averaged 25 points and 7.3 rebounds through these three games.
Embracing the mentality of a rebuild does lower the expectation of the team. The spirit of the rebuild is to show positive progression through young players and free agents. Rookie point guard Frank Ntitikina is already missing games due to injury. Lee and Hardaway are top earners on this team and have also been dormant when it comes to their stat line. They have attributed this struggle to their teammates.
Lee and Hardaway’s comments can be directed at both players and head coach Jeff Hornacek. For his players to be aggravated enough to speak out to the media, it shows the lack of control that Hornacek has over his team.
Hornacek hasn’t commented on the comments made by his players.
