LeBron James didn't support Donald Trump's campaign, and now that Trump's president-elect, the king of basketball reportedly won't support his business.
This year’s politics have shown to us how such could divide a country, ruin friendships and even families. It permeates society and even sectors in it, notwithstanding sports and other supposedly non-partisan sectors.
The Cavaliers have made other arrangements for players who do not want to stay at a New York hotel branded by President-elect Donald Trump. The New York City hotel is a standard for visiting NBA teams.
LeBron James and several teammates decided not to stay at Trump Soho in lower Manhattan last week. The Cavs have booked rooms at the luxury hotel for two days as the team played the Knicks on Wednesday.
The stance of James and some of his teammates is not the first of this kind regarding Trump hotels, but it's certainly the most high-profile. Since the election, the Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies have all boycotted Trump Hotels around America.
James publicly endorsed and campaigned for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who lost the election to Trump. Several of his teammates, including Richard Jefferson, Iman Shumpert and others have expressed their disappointment over Trump's win.
Some are applauding the players putting their money where their political views are. But this kind of boycott is nothing new for this election.
Anti-Trump activists compiled an entire list of companies to boycott because of business ties to the Trump family, including Amazon and Nordstrom. Trump supporters called for boycotts of Starbucks and PepsiCo. after their CEOs expressed concern after Trump's win. And Trump himself called for boycotts against Apple and Megyn Kelly's show on Fox News throughout the year.
The Cavaliers won against the New York Knicks, 126-94.
