Leave Thanksgiving Alone!

There is no need to shop!

Leave Thanksgiving Alone!
Heather Christina Schmidt

It is that time of the year again, the holidays!

That means it is time for the stores to pull out all the stops and throw out their best sales of the year. However, those Black Friday sales have started a lot earlier this year. Normally they begin a few days before Thanksgiving. Not this year. Some companies began their sales a week ago. Some people are already camped outside those stores to be first in line for the door busters. Lets be real for a second, some of those deals aren't even worth camping out for. But I find something more disturbing than that. The fact that stores nationwide are open on Thanksgiving.

I have worked in the mall and I know that they like to open up in the evening, right around dinner time. I am sorry, but that is ridiculous to me. Thanksgiving is a time to spend with your family. There is no need to force your employees to work on this holiday. I do not want to stop my meal to go and run out, probably be caught in a stampede and buy something I could always buy later on. Let's think about it, majority of these items we run out to buy are not necessities, they are the things we want. That is just plain ol greed.

I remember the mall being closed completely on Thanksgiving and I never thought about going there. I wanted the entire to be about the family. We have lost those values and to do what? SHOP!

I know my place of work is closed on Thanksgiving and I will not be shopping on that day. I am sick of the commercials and people praising the sales. You can always shop during the year end sales, when it is not a major holiday!

My advice to everyone is stay home and entire the day and night with your loved ones. And to the companies who are open, please stop being heartless to your employees.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
