Leave Room For Chivalry

Just because they grab the door and hold it open for you doesn’t mean they’re downplaying your physical abilities.

I don’t consider myself a “feminist” by today’s standards whatsoever; but I do believe that women can be independent and achieve success when they work hard and prove their worth. However, I believe that today’s society should leave room for chivalry and allow men to still be thoughtful.

There’s no reason that men can’t still show women small acts of kindness. Just because they grab the door and hold it open for you doesn’t mean they’re downplaying your physical abilities. The men who are still chivalrous will hold the door for you just to be a good man and do what their parents taught them.

If you consider yourself a feminist, that’s great! I’m not downplaying that label either. I just think that we should applaud the men who still treat women the way they should be treated. Let’s let men open car doors for us, bring us flowers every once in awhile and carry our bags. You won’t be any less of a strong, capable woman if you let them.

Don’t we women all want to be treated with a little extra care? Yes, we deserve to have the same opportunities as men in life, but we shouldn’t refuse a genuine, caring hand from a gentleman when he offers.

I support any other woman who works hard to get what she deserves whether that be in school, in the workplace, in the family or otherwise. But I also support any man who shows respect to a woman just out of pure sincerity. The guys who act generous and don’t expect anything in return are men. The guys who act nice just to take advantage of females are boys. There’s a difference.

Women aren’t the only ones to blame for a lack of chivalry these days. There are certainly men out there who are less than perfect, and who don’t deserve the women they chase. Knowing the difference between being genuine and fake is key in determining whether or not a man is chivalrous. In a world where dating is now demoted to daily text conversations or a nice comment on your Instagram picture, leave room for the men who hold your hands in public, buy you occasional gifts for the heck of it and surprise you with your favorite things.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
