Leave Malia Obama Alone

We were all 18 once.

The Obama’s are in a significant transition right now: It is an election year, meaning Barack’s second term is coming to an end so they prepare themselves for a new chapter in their back again normal lives. And now eight years later, daughters Sasha and Malia Obama are older and making decisions on their own regarding their futures. So far in the media what we’ve discovered in that youngest daughter Sasha has gotten her first job as a cashier at Martha’s Vineyard. People are happy and proud of her, even sharing pictures seen of her working with captions saying “See, Sasha is human just like us,” But when they turn the camera on her older sister who recently graduated highschool and is enrolled for Harvard University in the Fall of 2017, things turn for the worst in social media response.

Instead of going to the Democratic National Convention, POTUS and FLOTUS’ daughter, Malia, decided to go to Lollapalooza, like any normal teenager.

Video spread of the 18- year old dancing or what people are considering ‘twerking’ to a Bryson Tiller song. Comments follow the video saying ‘She should have left that twerking at home,’ or ‘Why wasn’t she at the DNC like she was supposed to?’

What did she do wrong?

She’s with her friends, they’re dancing, they’re having a good time and she got to take pictures with her favorite artists. Why can we do that and she can’t? This isn’t the first time she was targeted for trying to do normal things. Last year Malia went to a party at Harvard University in search for schools were a photo leaked on the internet of her walking by a ping pong table and other party-goers, holding a red solo cup in her hand. Okay, I know that does raise a red flag in a sense but we don’t know what was in her cup, it could’ve been water, soda. I’m a college student and yes, there are those people at a party including myself whose red solo cups aren’t filled with alcohol. Hell, I have a friend that likes to turn up on Coca Cola. This situation ties back to the Lollapalooza situation because she was having good clean fun here, and the suspicious items in this case was her attire on her night out.

She wore shorts and a crop top.

And?

Grown men and women are complaining because an 18-year-old girl at a festival is dressing like an 18-year-old girl at a festival. And even if the Obama’s didn’t like the attire that their eldest daughter was wearing that’s their business to worry about and use their own parenting skills to handle the situation. Not yours.

Go worry about your own kids.

There are other issues pertaining to horrible children’s behavior, like the former NFL star that was killed along with his wife by their sixteen-year-old son, because they wouldn’t buy him something he wanted. Why are we not talking about that?

Better yet, why are we not talking about North Korea declaring war on the United States?

Why was the public’s attention drawn away from real issues in the world for a girl having fun with friends at a festival?

Do your thing, Malia.

You're 18 and legal: have all the fun you want. (Until your parents say no then I can't help you there.)

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way.
