Learning To Love Yourself

Learning to love yourself can be a battle that you might face your entire life. Sometimes you might feel like you’re on top of the world and other times you might feel like you’ve hit rock bottom. But Loving yourself takes longer than just a day to yourself and focusing in on yourself, but it’s a start. Realizing what makes you happy and what doesn’t make you happy, putting yourself first and realizing that your life might not be perfect 24/7 is another great start.

Through life, many things can bring you down. Rather it's not getting the job you’ve been wanting since graduating from college, not getting the grade you needed to pass the class or even getting into an argument with a friend.

Learning to love yourself takes time, but some simple things can help bring yourself to the level of loving every part of yourself.

Don’t compare yourself to others no matter what.

I get looking up to others is great and having role models is important. But comparing your accomplishments against someone else’s is a disaster. Not only are you not looking at what you’ve done in your life but you are thinking down on yourself. People achieve success at different times and people go through hardships at different times.

Spend more time with yourself.

Spending a weekend in, relaxing and just focusing on yourself is important. Not only will you be able to de-stress away from everyone but it’s a great time to reflect on what you have been doing in your crazy life and realize that you are doing great things.

Explore new places.

Even if this means taking time out of your busy work week and life, exploring new things is important. This could mean taking a trip to a new state with some friends or even going hiking on a trail you’ve never been to. Exploring the world makes you realize how big the world is and how little things actually are.

Let go of the past and forgive.

Everyone struggles with forgiveness even if they won't admit it. Holding onto grudges for days or even years is putting stress on yourself. Forgive a friend or a family member and move on with your life. This also goes for letting go of the past, even if you can’t grasp a bad decision that you have made, life goes on.

Resolve issues with old friends/lost family members.

Remind everyone that you love, that you love them. Life is short and spending time with family and friends is important.

Treat yourself.

I don’t mean spend your entire bank account, but get a coffee in the morning or treat yourself to a new pair of shoes every once in a while.

Care about your appearance.

Not in a superficial way, but look good for yourself. You feel good when you look good and it’ll boost your confidence. Even if you have flaws, learn to love them and flaunt them. But it’s 100% okay to leave the house in sweats and a bun every once and a while.

Workout and Exercise weekly.

Not only is this good for your health, but it’ll boost your mood and make you feel energized and ready to take on the rest of the day.

Get a Hobby.

Watching Netflix series over and over is totally okay. But falling in love with crafting, hiking or anything else can be even more exciting!

Smile more.

This not only will make you happier, but it could make others happy as well

Don’t be judgmental

Be kind to everyone, because you never know what they’re facing.

Realize that everyone you meet might not like you and you’ll never be able to please everyone in your life. But loving yourself is one of the most important things in life because at the end of the day, you’ll always have yourself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
