Michael Scott is king of mistakes and has spent much of his time making them so we as viewers can learn from his mistakes. Yes, he is extreme and hard to handle but the show is just like normal life, just funnier. The Office is a show that may not be for everyone, but it does have lessons that can be taken away, just like with everything.
As viewers, we can learn from Jim and Pam’s struggling relationship, Michael Scott’s unorthodox managerial skills and Dwight’s endeavors in advancing his career. Look for the lessons because the world is a place where someone has probably had a similar incident and now you don't have to make the same mistake too!
1. Don't make promises you can't keep
It is easy to promise something to please but promises shouldn’t be treated as empty threats. Scott makes promises constantly that he fails to follow through on. However, none are more transcendent as the “Scott’s Tot’s” episode. If you haven’t seen it, watch it, season six, episode twelve. It is still, one of the hardest things for me to watch.
2. Fiancé isn't final
Jim and Pam are just your average power couple who you know will end up together. Even though Pam was engaged, Jim continued to pursue her. Fiancé is a fancy word for almost married. Because Jim had the audacity to reveal his feelings, in the episode "Casino Night", to an engaged woman shows us that true love doesn't stop for a ring.
3. Always remember the fire alarm
I know that you are thinking, "of course remember the fire alarm," but as demonstrated from The Office episode "Stress relief: part 1" when you are scared for your life, reason can hop out the window. Learn from these cooky people, stay calm and think.
4. Goodbyes are important
Some people do not like goodbyes, like Daryl Fillman from the show. In the second to last episode of the series, he decides to leave Scranton permanently. But even though you may not like goodbyes, they are important to others around you. And if you make the goodbye fun, like a group dance, it might not be so bad.
5. The good old days are now
Andy Bernard says it better than anyone when he said, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the 'Good ole days' before you've actually left them." Cherish all of the moments you can because the days that don't feel so special now will be part of your good old days come the near future.
6. No one likes a jerk
Everyone can be a jerk sometimes but it is important that we acknowledge this and look for the warning signs. In the 20th episode on its sixth season, the office is faced with learning humility in the workplace. Don't be the guy who everyone hates because you think you're better than everyone else.
7. Live for the moments
Michael Scott is not one to normally read situations and moments well but in the fifth season's "Company Picnic" he comes to the conclusion that it is important to appreciate moments for what they are. Don't try and make them more and inevitably make those around you uncomfortable.
