Nothing Is Permanent So Let's Live Like It

The important lesson about "messing up" that I learned through high school economics.

Nothing Is Permanent So Let's Live Like It

I could hear voices down the hall as I darted through the school doors five minutes after the late bell. With my keys in one hand and my coffee in the other, I arrived in my first-period class and sat in my seat just as my teacher began explaining short run and long run economics. I expected a very long and complicated answer, chock full of economic terms that I wouldn't understand due to my inattention over the past week. But I never got one. Instead, she explained, "In the short run, everything is fixed. You have to take what you have at the moment and do what you can with it. But in the long run, everything can change, and nothing is permanent. You could wake up tomorrow and change the whole production."

Throughout my time in high school, I moved with caution and lived in fear of making mistakes. You only get four years to prepare yourself for college, and the last thing I wanted was to mess up. I, like many others, had been ready to graduate and move on in life since first stepping foot into the hallowed halls of high school. But I had also been afraid; of choosing the wrong classes, the wrong friends, the wrong path, the wrong major, the wrong college. After being reminded that nothing is permanent, however, I began to recognize the endless possibilities available: I could wake up one day and turn my entire life around. I can change my major. I can change my mind. And change it again.

I can make mistakes now so that by the time I have to deal with a problem in the short run, I won't have to simply make do with what I have. But rather, I will be confident with what I've set myself up with. And I made my fair share of mistakes in the past four years. From not taking a certain risk or taking one I shouldn't have, to not taking a class seriously, to unnecessarily stressing myself out.

But I learned that in the long run, everything could and will change, so there's no reason to stress about the short run today. The experiences I've gained over the past few years have made me bolder and less afraid of the uncertain. "Messing up" no longer makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up in terror but puts me at ease for the future I'll face. As I move on, to the University of Maryland, and beyond. I'm going to keep making mistakes and keep changing. I'm going to move without fear and never back down. Nothing is permanent, so I'm going to keep living like it.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.

15 Things That Happen On Your Birthday

Do you have a small get-together or throw a big bash?

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.
