What I Learned From Taking A Video Everyday For A Year

I could see my year of growth in five minutes.

In 2016 I decided I was going to take one video every day for an entire year.

The idea started after a friend had shown me the video montage that she had created from her year before. It was my senior year of high school going into my freshman year of college, so what a better way to honor and remember 2016.

It was not easy at first and I missed a fair amount of days just because I was not doing anything interesting or it completely slipped my mind to film. But eventually, I got the hang of it and I was using videos from what I took on snapchat or asking friends to send videos of us from that day.

Soon the year was over and I pieced together all the clips to show my year in a five minute video.

This is what I learned:

How much can change in a year. I went from a senior in high school to a second semester freshman in a span of 5 minutes. I got to see how much my life transformed just within 366 days. The people who were in my videos changed, as I lost and gained friendships and who I decided to spend my time with. I saw what I valued evolve based on what I filmed or did not film.

I could relive moments of my life. Rewatching some of the videos I realized how unreliable the human memory is. Some events in my life I thought that I would never forgot completely slipped my mind until watching the videos. But when I was watching them, I felt as though I was reliving the year and certain clips brought back emotions I had in those moments both good and bad. It left me nostalgic. I also was able to share the video montage with my friends who were in it and we could relive some moments together.

I could watch myself grow. I could see my year of growth in five minutes. I was a very different person in the beginning of 2016 compared to to the end of the year. The videos I took were important things to me at the time and I got to see what I valued, but I also got to witness myself changing and becoming the person I am today.

I will always have this. I'm always going to have these videos. It's like a photo album of my year that is extremely accessible. Especially in this digital generation we keep our memories on our phones or computers, so making a montage video was just an extra step to put everything from that year in one place.

Ever since creating my video, I have highly encouraged people to do the same because it is a great way to remember your year, but also a great way to see yourself grow and see how much you change in year.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
