What I Learned During My First Semester At WPI

Roughly one year ago, I was accepted into WPI's biomedical engineering program. I swore when I found out, because WPI was my top school and also the school least likely to accept me. Ask me where I would go a year ago, and I probably would have said anywhere but WPI.

It's been a true pleasure to attend, and here is what I have learned so far.

1.) Read the syllabus. It tells you important information, such as if you can use a note-sheet on tests, test dates, homework due dates, and teaching policies.

2.) Be nice to the TA's. They know what they are talking about and can assist you if needed in the labs.

3.) Read the course descriptions wisely. I ended up in a class intended for physics majors because I didn't do this. I am a biomedical and mechanical engineering double major, not a physics major.

4.) Don't wing tests unless you are absolutely confident with the material.

5.) Go to class. If you don't go to class, at least be smart about which classes you skip.

6.) Do your homework, it can boost your grade.

7.) If your class has a lab component, put in effort on the lab reports. These are also a good way to boost your grade.

8.) Talking about politics can either gain you a really good friend or a really horrible enemy. Use this tool wisely.

9.) It's never too late to try something new.

10.) Be nice to the professors you have. They could come in handy when you need a recommendation.

11.) Study way in advance for exams, you'll need it.

12.) Just plan your entire term accordingly. It's as simple as writing down when you have exams and homework due.

13.) Carry an agenda, or use an agenda. It will be your best friend. Or at least help organize you a little.

14.) Make sure your roommate actually goes to your college. This could lead to awkwardness later on.

15.) Set aside time to do your work. Otherwise you'll be rushing to get that lab report in at midnight.

16.) Go out in the hall and talk to the people on your floor. They don't bite.

17.) Go outside and talk to people. They don't bite either. And you don't notice the skewed gender ratio.

18.) People are entitled to their opinions. Respect that.

19.) Get to a computer with Ethernet for course registration. Wifi goes down. Wifi going own= greater chance you'll be waitlisted from half of your classes.

20.) Learn where your bonus points on your meal plan are good at. Use them wisely.

21.) DAKA cookies are a commodity on campus. Also use this wisely.

22.) Once you go to WPI, you sign up for the experience of a lifetime.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
