What I Learned From Reading #Girlboss

Be honest with yourself! - Be a #GirlBoss

What I Learned From Reading #Girlboss

I’ve written many times already about not knowing what to do with my life or even what to study. Recently however, my perspective on my goals has changed completely; I’ve never felt this degree of clarity or serenity in my whole life. This fall semester at Miami Dade College I decided to take MMC 200, Intro to Mass Media Communications, and learned about my newest interest in communications. Communications can be, or one could argue that it tends to be, broad. Mass communications has various mediums such as: film, TV, radio, and recorded music. You name it! I’ve always been a big fan of those mediums — especially being part of the millennial generation who loves it so much. Who doesn’t love fashion magazines and movies, right? I especially enjoy binge watching Marvel series on Netflix. At this point, you might be thinking, “Why is she talking about mass media communications?” Well, one of the reasons is: I love talking about this subject and I just bought an amazing book titled “#Girlboss” by Sophia Amoruso, creator of Nasty Gal.

Okay, what could Girlboss possibly have to do with communications? Since reading this book, I've come to realize that I wish to become a female entrepreneur, and in the near future, I'm hoping I can accomplish that. Writing about dreams and one's goals is pretty nerve wracking, but everyone should be honest with themselves in order to succeed. Being true to yourself is quite significant for a person because imagine telling yourself " Yes, I want to become a doctor," but deep down you know that's not what you really want to become as a professional individual. I encourage each one of you to be honest to yourself and just connect the dots and find out what you love to do. And here I'm writing once again about my goals and dreams. Maybe in a near future future I'll be able to be create my own media company (communications) I'll let you know how that dream pans out in the future. I also have to be realistic in order to achieve that: I will have to work my butt off and start by working for someone else probably, but that's okay with me.

Sophia Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age 22 she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school — a job she'd taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. This book inspired me and helped me think critically about some of the things I never thought of doing before — or at least not realistically. She became rich before turning 30, who wouldn’t love that in life, right? Perhaps some of the most influential words I've heard in a while are from this book; “The older I get the less confident I become” ( Sophia Amoruso.) Reading this book helped me dream bigger, which is something a girl should do in order to become a successful person. Therefore, dream big because you never know who is watching, maybe you will inspire someone else. Sophia is a female entrepreneur, which makes me believe in myself and in any female individual — especially in a business dominated by men; feminist much? Becoming an entrepreneur never crossed my mind, but being an entrepreneur makes you become passionate about what you do, allowing you to take risks and learn from your failures.

Now, it's time for you to go out there and start believing in yourself how anything is possible. As mentioned before, don't forget that maybe someone just might be watching you, and you might be inspiring them — but only if one works hard towards his or her goals. And don't forget to be honest with yourself, and make a list of what your passions are, which will help you learn about your goals. Be ambitious and stick to a goal you believe in and you'll certainly get there! Small steps at a time, but in the end when they add up, it will be worth it. Be a #Girlboss!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
