What I Learned From My Prison Pen Pal
Kaleigh Byrne

At the beginning of this year I was offered the opportunity to receive a pen pal through prison ministry, and while the idea of writing to a stranger in this way made me a little nervous, I quickly signed up. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I can assure you the outcome was far more rewarding than I could have imagined.

He told me about his hobbies. He told me about his love of classic rock and how he was burdened with a horrible singing voice. He's a whiz at Scrabble and can hold his own in handball, but sometimes his achy knee holds him down. I learned that he was just a normal person who had made a mistake.

He told me about his family. My heart broke for him as he told me about the passing of his parents and how his siblings are too busy with their families to visit. He told me that my letter was the first one he had received in years, and I learned how lonely prison can be.

He told me about his past. He told me about the mistake he made 22 years ago and how it flipped his life upside down. He was honest-- there was no sugar coating or attempting to lessen the severity of what he had done. I learned that he was truly sorry, and that he had accepted his time.

He told me about his conversion. "...and for the first time, I stepped into a church in 2009." He told me about his life changing for the better and the peace he's found in his life since then, and I learned that it's never too late to turn your life around.

He told me about his dreams. He told me that when he closes his eyes he can go anywhere in the world, and that when he closes his eyes he's swimming with dolphins in the Pacific and riding his motorcycle across the country. I learned the importance of imagination and positive thinking, especially when the light at the end of the tunnel seems too far.

I remember nervously writing my first letter to this man thinking this was probably going to be a year of awkward and shallow letters, but it wasn't. This man was open and honest and truly wanted to get to know me. This man encouraged me and prayed for me. While I have always been quick to judge those in prison, this man taught me a lot about the dignity of every human.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I encourage you to reach out and write to a pen pal of your own.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
