I have always felt that you develop the same music taste that your parents have. It seems plausible because you are listening to the music that they enjoy before your music taste even develops.
It sort of carries on through your life. I don’t mind riding in the car and listening to the 70s on 7. I enjoy it and even know most of the songs. Being away from home now whenever I hear these songs I have grown up to, it feels almost like a source of comfort.
From the time I was born, I have been listening to Bruce Springsteen. He is my mom’s favorite singer and if you ever mention his name her face instantly brightens up.
I guess Bruce could be her comparison of One Direction for me.
A flashback to her years as a teen with so many memories surrounding this one singer. I mean he did look pretty good back in the day.
Her love doesn’t just encompass Bruce, but rather the entire E Street Band. They are pretty amazing though, having an entire live band also put so much passion into each and every performance just as much as Bruce does.
The love of Bruce Springsteen comes along with him being from New Jersey as well. Do you really live in Jersey if you don’t love listening to Springsteen?
If you’re sitting on the beach or maybe driving down that first warm day of summer, it has always been a must that Springsteen be playing. It doesn’t feel right when I cross the Mantoloking Bridge and Born in the USA isn’t playing. It’s a sign that summer is here. He is also most affectionately known as ‘The Boss’, and it is widely known that when you mention that you are referencing Bruce.
When I was younger I used to loathe listening to Springsteen in the car, because that was all my mom had played. This was not the type of music I wanted to be listening to.
There were too many instruments, and sometimes the live songs played on E Street Radio went on forever. This was not the pop songs I was interested in. However, over the years I have embraced Bruce and come to love his music as well. I am guilty of having been found dancing to 'Glory Days' or 'Girls in their Summer Clothes'.
I have been fortunate enough to see Bruce twice at MetLife Stadium. Both times I saw him perform I saw my mom let down her guard and dance and sing like nobody's business for four hours straight.
The second time I went to see him I had surprised my mom with the tickets and we made a trip out of it. I was older then and could now truly understand what all the “hype” was about. There is no performer out there these days who willingly plays for four hours straight, and have the crowd on their feet the whole time.
The best moment from the entire show was when Bruce played ‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’ in the middle of August, but I still screamed that song along with the other 80,000 people there.
Being away at college now I haven’t had my daily dose of Bruce Springsteen like I would usually get if I was home. A few weeks ago I texted my mom a video of me jamming out to ‘Rosalita’.
My caption was ‘I’m having withdrawal symptoms’. Somehow the tables have turned and I am now the one listening to Bruce Springsteen while doing my work just for the fun of it, or to remind me of my mom on the days that I miss her the most.
I may not have liked Bruce very much in the beginning, but over the years I willingly listened because I knew how much it meant to my mom. I’m glad we have this bond over something that we both now love.
