What I Learned During My First Week In College
Post Gazette

I chose to go to a small, liberal arts college 4 hours away from home. Given that my high school was extremely overcrowded and I had little friends, I thought a small college was the best option for me. Here are just a few things to highlight my week:

  1. I really am an introvert.
    • In high school I always thought I was outgoing and loved talking to people, but I haven’t made very many friends so far. I think to myself “Go and talk to them, they won’t bite,” but I don’t.
  2. Spacing your classes out is smart.
    • All of my classes are spaced out enough during the day that I have time to relax in between.
  3. It’s a little harder than I expected.
    • So far I’ve only had a little bit of trouble in German 1, but that’s because I have no clue how to speak German. Aside from that, my classes are relatively easy (for now.)
  4. Class discussions can go anywhere.
    • My English class is discussion based and I love it. Hearing everyone else’s points of view and how they perceive what we are to read is so interesting.
  5. Free food = the best food
    • I love food as it is, but when it’s free it's even better. Not going to lie… I went somewhere just to get pizza and then left the other day.
  6. The on-campus mailroom is a mess.
    • I ordered stuff from Amazon and they proceeded to tell me it was never delivered. It was in fact delivered on the scheduled date, but I received it two days late.
  7. Being away from home sucks.
    • I am 4 hours away from home and I’ve so home sick all week. I haven’t cried but once since my parents left, but it still sucks.
  8. There is no reason you should be bored.
    • There is always something going on on-campus, so if you get bored it’s your fault.
  9. Sweet sweet freedom.
    • Not that I don’t love living with my parents, but I love that I can eat half a pack of cookies if I want (of course at my own risk.) Or eat dinner at 8 pm.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
