What I Learned From Big Hero 6!

Nerd school isn't the only place that teaches things.

What I Learned From Big Hero 6!

One of my personal favorites of all time! Big Hero 6 is a movie for both kids and adults to enjoy and watch again and again! More than that, Big Hero 6 teaches us a few lessons that we all need to be reminded of every so often. Here are a few I took away after watching this movie for the, let me count--billionth time!

1. True sibling love

The single greatest lesson taught to us in this movie the power of sibling love! Tadashi Hamada is, in my opinion, the perfect older brother! He encourages Hiro to use his intelligence for more than just bot fighting, he shows Hiro college is cooler than he believes, pushes him to "shake things up" and look for a new angle, reassures him that he can get into the school because his invention is that good and tries to protect him from doing stupid things (like bot fighting). Aside from Baymax, Tadashi is the single greatest character in this movie!

2. Depression is a thing!

Upon Tadashi's death, Hiro almost completely gives up on life! Unlike most Disney films where a death is brushed aside or quickly forgotten, Hiro's depression lasts for a solid 45% of the movie! He starts off as unmotivated and unable to carry on normal life. Then, he slowly moves into seeking an answer for Tadashi's untimely death. Finally, he comes to accept that Tadashi is gone, but not until after dealing with the anger that followed upon finding those answers. While there is a comedic moment where Baymax tries to cure Hiro of this depression, it is still very real and it goes deeper than just a regular physical injury and--excuse me, I need to grab some tissues, my eyes are sweating again.

3. Revenge Changes Nothing!

Hiro learns this quickly after finding out that Professor Callaghan was both responsible for and not sympathetic towards Tadashi's death. Upon finding out this information, Hiro, impulsively, believes that destroying Callaghan is the only way to solve everything, but is stopped by his friends just in time. Later, upon realizing that it would not be what Tadashi wanted, Hiro knew that revenge would not change nor accomplish anything. He accepts that Tadashi is gone because of Callaghan, but he also seems to forgive him for his actions, now understanding why Callaghan did what he did. I'm running low on tissues--*sniffle*

4. Girls can be tough and nerdy!

Honey Lemon and GoGo, my main girls! They can do whatever they want because they're pretty, mega-smart, and can kick some butt if the moment calls for it! Like, dag nab it, girls can do whatever they want! Woman up, guys!

5. You can do or be anything you believe you can!

Just because you think you have limits, doesn't mean they actually exist! You can be anything you dream of becoming and so much more! Sure, these college kids were, well, college kids, but there was still so much potential for them! They're nerds! They spend all day at their nerd school in their nerd lab doing nerdy stuff, but look what they did just because Hiro believed they could be so much more! Maybe with some upgrades, you can be a superhero too.

6. Recycling is important!

Don't be wasteful! Use only what you need! Reuse something if you can! Recycle!

7. Seat belts save lives! Buckle up every time!

When going at high speeds down a winding road, make sure you are safely fastened and hold on tight. Don't ignore the warnings, always wear your seat belt. Click it or ticket, as they say!

8. There are no red lights in a car chase!

If there's one thing we should all take away from this movie is that when being chased by a maniac in a mask, you do not stop at red lights or stop signs. When you're life is at stake, the last thing people tend to care about are the safety regulations of the road. Always be prepared to jump onto high bridges, cross train tracks as the train fast approaches and be able to speed up on 90 degree hills.

9. Being able to turn into a fire breathing lizard at will is not science!

Honey Lemon makes an effort to point out that certain things are not science, and becoming a monster is definitely one of those things. While it requires a lot of chemical combinations and something that probably has to do with biology or anatomy, it's a shock to see that it is, in fact, not science!

10. College teaches you things you already know!

You go to college to relearn everything you already know! But it gets better! You come out of college knowing nothing more than what you did before and you're debt! What a time to be alive!

11. Puberty is often a confusing time for young adolescents flowering into manhood!

Been there, done that, never want to do it again. Big Hero 6 touches on the confusing and very emotional time that kids go through when reaching puberty, especially for young men. They will start to see an increase in body hair, especially on their face, chest, armpits and---oh, look at the time!

12. Treatments for personal loss include compassion!

Baymax is really all anyone needs to get through a rough time. I mean, it's in his name! Why is his name Baymax? Because he's Bae to the Max! Ahh!

13. Don't run into a burning building!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
