If you need another reason to procrastinate, or want a new hobby to impress people with (or both) then it’s time for you to pick up a ukulele. You can go to your nearest thrift shop, discount music store, or any of the plethora of shops online, and pick out a ukulele of your very own. It’s not much of a time commitment, and unless you get a baritone, it should fit comfortably in any dorm room or apartment. Learning to play the ukulele is much easier than it looks, and it looks pretty easy, right? First you need to learn how to strum.
After that, you can add on a few chords. The ukulele is a very versatile instrument, and you can pretty much learn any song after you get down some of the basic chords. There are only four strings on the ukulele, so your fingers don't have to do much work until you start learning some of the more difficult chords. Soon enough, you'll be able to play some of your favorite jams for yourself and your friends. One very useful thing about the ukulele is that it is very easy to travel with. When I first began learning, I would keep my ukulele in my car (keep in mind this was in the spring, so it would not go out of tune in a hot or cold car) and I could practice when I showed up too early for a meeting, or if I had to wait to pick someone up. This also means you can also easily take your ukulele with you on camping trips, or you could be an incarnation of the "acoustic guitar guy" at a party if you really feel like it.Before you know it, you'll be able to rock out like a pro. Even though the ukulele is usually imagined along with a warm, sunny beach setting, you can definitely kick it and play some AC/DC if that's what you love. Teaching yourself an instrument for fun gives you the freedom to get creative and follow your passions.
It may take some time, but with patience and diligence, you'll have a pretty solid set list of songs you can play when you really don't want to start an essay too soon. You'll also have a creative outlet for when you can't think of what to write for said essay. The ukulele provides a way to express how you feel with more than just words, and the best part is, you don't need to have an audience. If you play for your friends and family, though, you may decide that it's time to broaden your horizons. Having a solid handle on the instrument can give you the courage to step out of your comfort zone, which can prepare you for doing so in other situations.
