5 Important Lessons 'Joe Dirt' Can Teach You

If you've ever seen “Joe Dirt”, you've probably laughed incredibly hard. However, Joe Dirt could be a symbol to all of us living in such a boring world. Make friends with a meteorite, talk on the radio any chance you get, “Find your parents” (or purpose in life), make friends with a janitor, fall in love with someone WAY out of your league, and lastly, live like nobody is watching.

1. Keep Smiling.

Sometimes life gives you a big ole chunk of poopy and you don't always have space peanuts attached to it, sometimes its real peanuts on a chunk of poopy, but we gotta keep smiling. Life is rough and people get hurt, but the only way to get through is to smile in every situation. Opening up yourself to positivity instead of negativity could drastically change the way you look at everything in life! In “Joe Dirt”, even though he ate a meal (with ketchup) on the frozen chunk of poop, he smiled afterwards and laughed through being a public joke.

2. Express yourself in every way possible.

Through the way that you dress, the way you speak, the way you love, express yourself in every way you possibly can. Speak about your life and display your talents when you have a chance. Everyone is beautiful in every way and its important to appreciate the ways people express themselves. In addition, find the purpose to why you do, what you do. Make sure that when you have a voice, use it to your advantage. Find your passion and what you want in life, and create awareness in what you long to enhance or prevent. In the movie, Joe used his resources and being on the radio to create awareness and try to find his parents and Brandi. By using these things he found what he longed for.

3. Be nice to everyone in your path.

Being nice is so important. The happiness you could potentially create can help in many ways. Without the niceness of Joe, he would have never found the many people who helped him along his path. From a janitor, to cereal killer, to radio host, they all helped him find his parents. His path, much like many of ours, is so hectic and a little niceness can change the outcome of the future. A small smile can go a long way.

4. Find the people to love you.

FIND YOURSELF A BRANDY AND CHARLIE. People are naturally attracted to others. In the movie, Joe Dirt is attracted to Brandy, a beautiful and tall blonde, that loves him. Find people that love you, get off your path, don't focus on the small stuff, and get yourself a cute dog that can make you laugh and give you memories. (The most important thing is obviously getting yourself a dog or a cat.)

5. Live like nobody is watching.

No matter how many people laugh at you, live and smile like nobody will judge you. Never care what people think about your life. Joe Dirt gets made fun of by the nation, but at the end of the day he got what he wanted and had the ability to notice the people that loved him through everything.

It sounds crazy to learn something from a comedy movie, but Joe Dirt has a positive attitude after so many things, and thats important in the real world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
