Learn From Me: Don't Do This

There are many things you do in college that you probably shouldn't do. A lot of them happen to be illegal, like participating in underage drinking, plying minors with alcohol, recreational drug use, amongst other things.

But there are also other things you shouldn't do in college, the lame kind. You know, the ones that fuck your life up in the smaller way. It's the little things, you know?

So here's a list of things you should learn from me and NOT do:

1. Don't let your laundry pile up till you run out of pants AND leggings.

I try not to do this very frequently, but it happens every once in a while and I hate it. It's so inconvenient because by the time I realize I'm out of clothes, it's the busiest time of the week and I don't really have time to do laundry so I'll either have to wear smelly clothes till I can do laundry or wear dresses and tights. It makes my life hell.

2. Don't stay in bed until ten minutes before class, especially if you like showering in the morning.

I rarely do this, but when I do, I hate myself more than I thought possible. It's absolute torture. Because at that point it becomes a moral battle of whether or not I should go to class at this point, and the bed is so comfortable but I should go to class and it's hell. Just get out of bed in a timely fashion.

3. Don't buy snacks that you will not eat.

I am guilty of this. I go to Thomson store a lot and buy with my eyes and not with my stomach. It doesn't help that I'm on the small meal plan, either, so I end up buying things that I know I won't eat but still think I will. And then I either give it away or let it sit and hope someone else takes it.

4. Don't stay up until the wee hours of the night if you don't have to.

I literally did this last night. I could have gone to bed at 11pm. Which sounds late to my parents, but my usual is 1am. So what was I doing instead of getting valuable hours of sleep? Fucking nothing. I wasn't doing anything productive. I just was on my computer for two hours. For no reason. Don't do this. Be productive. Obviously give yourself a break every once in a while, because you need these. But don't waste time.

5. Don't overextend yourself.

It's a trend I've seen in Ohio Wesleyan students. And while it looks great on resumes and you gain a lot of experience being involved in so many different things, but there will come a time where you'll find yourself with no free hours during the daytime and it will take a toll. And at one point, you're going to crash, however that may be. Trust me. Once I cried every day for a week over the smallest things: CRASHING.

6. Don't put others before yourself.

Personal relationships are important. But you're in college for your career. And if you don't devote the same amount of time to yourself, your goals and your academics than you do to others, it will come back to bite you in the ass. Of course, there are extreme occurrences where one homework assignment is worth less than your friend making it through the night, and that's understandable. But if you're in college to build a career, your social life cannot be your first priority all the time.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
