LeaderShape Institute 2015: Leading With Integrity, Living in Possibility

LeaderShape is not something that can be conceptualized in a 500-word post. A five hour conversation wouldn’t even do it justice. Trust me, I’ve tried to make it work. In a nutshell, 60 students met at Camp Joy for a week of leadership training and community building that culminated in the creation of 60 visions, each with the power to change the world. The experience was life changing to say the least. It was a week overflowing with encouragement, challenge, introspection, and authenticity.

We believed in a common vision, approaching it uniquely, but believing in it all the same. That vision, simply stated, is that everyone has the power to enact positive change in the world. We reflected that vision in 60 different ways. Some chose to focus on possibility in healthcare; others on opportunity for the underprivileged; still others on growth within student life at Ohio State.

We built a community, existing for one week in a culture of support and possibility. On day one, we were strangers. On day seven, we were a family founded in openness and honesty. A particularly insightful comment made by one Lawrence Stacey sums up the sentiment best (I’m paraphrasing but hopefully I can capture the statement’s power): “When one stands in their own truth, it gives others the confidence to live in theirs.“

Without the openness that each individual brought to this experience, the community we built would have been flawed. It would have lacked luster and depth. However, no one was malicious. Feedback was love. We collectively stepped into our challenge zones, blind to what we might find there but trusting nonetheless.

By day three we teased and challenged each other as only siblings could, testing each other’s patience and sanity with somewhat cruel mind games. For the record, I have the ball, okay, and this is definitely a good line.

My fellow graduates of the LeaderShape Institute: You have a fire in your eyes, a pebble in your pocket, and a story to share. The number of lives you all will change as you spread your visions across campus is limitless.

Continue to speak passionately as you never know who will connect with your passions and help guide you in your mission to change the world. Believe in it and revel it it. Just don’t get so caught up talking about it that you forget to enact it. Eventually you need to JUST DO IT!

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Advice To Live By As Told By Bob's Burgers

The Belchers hold the key to a better life.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
