Halloween is quickly approaching and couples everywhere are searching the depths of Pinterest to find the most original, incredibly corny couple costume possible.
Finding something special for you and your significant other is extremely exciting because you have someone in your life willing to dress up, take cute pictures, and enjoy the night together and show off how original your idea is.
I would know, there used to be a time when I would do the same thing.
My boyfriend, Michael, and I have been in an ongoing long distance relationship for about three years now out of the four years and three months that we have been together. Since our colleges separate us miles and miles apart, the holiday season is a bit dampened since we can't actually spend them together. Thinking that the last time we shared a Halloween together with a corny shared costume, was our Senior year of high school at 18-years-old.
Now that we are 21-years-old, I can't help but feel nostalgic this time of year about not having the ability to spend a spooky Halloween night with my person dressed up as something crazy I found online that he would somehow agree to do. For another two years, we, unfortunately, have to spend Halloween's, Valentines Day's, and even birthday's apart from one another, which really isn't fun. Last Valentine's Day, we both ordered dinner together and chatted on Skype all night long...Yes, we make it unique in our own way for the time being, but you could imagine there were a lot of tears that day when you see every couple holding hands on campus with their special someone. Some of these holidays are filled with so much love, fun, and memories that we can't share together and it is truly unfortunate that that is something we have to miss out on over and over again.
For now.
For now, yeah we might be missing some holiday's together that every non-long distance couple gets to share and take for granted. For now, we might be missing out on Tuesday night dinner dates, movie nights, going to parties together, and even random late night diner trips.
Long distance is temporary, and we must remind ourselves that when we face the overwhelming feeling of nostalgia.
Couples in long distance relationships, your time will soon come where you don't have to worry about having separate plans for the holidays. Soon enough, you too will have the ability to search Pinterest for hours on end finding something special for you and your partner. A time will come where you will not have to ship bouquet's of roses to one another, boxes full of candies and goodies for birthday's and Skype dates to recap special occasions.
Loving someone from a distance has its ups and downs for sure. One thing that is extremely exciting to look forward to is when it's all over. The time to celebrate these fun quirky holiday's together after however long you are apart, for my case four years, will be so incredibly worth it in the end.
Remind yourself that this is an experience that will help you grow as a couple, not tear you down. If your person is really your person, you will have plenty of years worth to create wonderful holiday memories together!
Plus, you don't want to waste all your good Halloween costume ideas already!
