We’re in college, so that must mean we’re paying our dues until we get the degree, the job, and then all live in shiny cars and big houses on mountain hills. Right?
Whether that’s the path we’re headed for or not, that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun along the way. So, make sure to find reasons to laugh: starting with right here on campus.
This year, we’re paying $10 to the Student Union Board in our fees. The Student Life Coalition is a fantastic partnership between three organizations on campus to educate us in becoming successful leaders, exposing us to a variety of cultures, and the Student Union Board has a mission to teach us something new for every fun-filled event (whether you’re aware of it or not). Attend any event you can, like the Open Mic Night coming up on November 12.
And if you’re overwhelmed with all the fun happening (like me every week), try putting all the dates of the events on your mobile calendar as a reminder. That way, you’ll never miss out on an opportunity for free food, a fabulous picture/video for Snapchat, and especially for the guaranteed inevitable laughter that will explode from your lips. (I promise, even in your exhaustion you will find reasons to laugh).
College is a time for learning, yes, but to function and succeed we have to allow ourselves a break now and again. So, find out where the food is and where you can study and cope with the stress. Then, be sure to relax. Watch a funny Ellen video - or five. Call your best friend and poke fun at the foolishness surrounding you daily. Stop what you’re doing and observe the people around you: you might spot a friend/classmate to talk to or even find humor in watching people just living their lives. People do funny things when they think nobody's watching. Trust me on this.
If it’s one of those weeks where you really can’t find humor in anything, crawl up in bed, play some music (Along with the popular ones, 8tracks.com is a personal favorite), and sleep. Or cry. Whichever is more necessary. Sometimes both are. We’re human beings and sometimes we have to “crack,” no matter how grown up we are. Hopefully, we break into laughter, but if not, crying and rest are just as essential. Allow your body to renew itself in either of those three ways.
But whatever you choose to do,remember your state of being is most important. So go out and get a little wiggity wild if you need to: you deserve it.
