Laughing My Heart Out Every Morning Has Helped Me Gain A Different Perspective In Life

I laugh a lot.

No, not like “you see a funny meme and you exhale a little harder” kind of laugh.

No, not even a chuckle or the soft giggle that causes the corners of my mouth to lift just a bit.

I’m talking laughter.

Knee-slapping, eyes shut, silent laughter. Sounding like a seal with the flu kind of laughter.

I don’t even know when I started doing this, but every morning after I had a shower, I would pull up something funny. Stand-up comedy, Youtube videos, Twitter or old Vines (RIP Vine we miss you), you name it. I would just play something and end up with sore abs every morning from cracking up.

And day by day, it kind of became routine. I’d find something to laugh at every morning and start the day off with a smile and really bad puns on my mind. The jokes I heard incorporated themselves into conversations I had with people and what I shared with them. The more comedy I watched, the more things I found funny. I would crack jokes everywhere, in every situation. Okay, not like every situation, but I just gained a stronger funny bone.

It’s called the humor-us - ahahaha

Okay, I’m so sorry for that.

But I love it. I love laughing and being able to just feel elated a good amount of the time.

Why weren’t more people that I knew like that?

I realized that I surrounded myself with a lot of negative people. People who expanded on their problems and didn’t deviate from them. People who kind of chained themselves with this pessimistic attitude with school and life, and spread it to other people as well.

While I do agree that it’s okay to get sad and be down in the dumps for a while, I also think that situations in life could be altered if we weren’t so hard on ourselves.

If we learned how to laugh a little bit.

Life sucks. It’s not fair. It’s a pain in the butt. But honestly, if you look at some of the situations you’re currently dealing with in hindsight, life is funny as hell.

Life is so ironic and if situational irony wasn’t the epitome of my life, nothing is.

Honestly, I just need to have my own TV show.

There is always a different side to a situation. Always something you could laugh at and be thankful for.

The amount of times I have tripped over something and COMPLETELY face planted in public is ridiculous. And normally, if that happened to anyone else, it would immediately be a tweet or go in a group chat going “omg worst day ever that was SO embarrassing”.

But think about it.

You probably made someone’s day by being an idiot.

Now you’ll live as a story that they’ll tell their friends and those friends will tell their friends.

Something that they’ll always laugh about.

So instead of falling face first and threatening to sue the sidewalk, laugh it off and go and make someone’s day.

Most situations in life don’t have to be as heavy-hearted as they seem.

A change of attitude brings a change of perspective.

So the next time you’re late to a meeting or got gum stuck in your hair, laugh about it. Because honestly, that’s hilarious and you’ll think so too in a month or so.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
