With the beginning of April came a new wave of shows and movies to come and leave Netflix. While the fact that “The Princess Bride” is being removed deeply saddens us all, one show coming to the streaming service offers some consolation. That show is “Wynonna Earp”.
“Wynonna Earp” is a Canadian-produced show that airs on the network SyFy. It follows the story of the Earp family, descendants of the infamous Wyatt Earp, as they fight to break a curse in the little town of Purgatory that causes all the previous outlaws killed by Wyatt to be resurrected as revenants, hell-bent on destroying the Earp line. Wynonna is the current Earp heir, capable of wielding Peacemaker, Wyatt’s gun which is the only thing that can send the revenants back to hell. Helping her is her sister Waverly, an agent of a secret government organization, and the real Doc Holliday.
The premise might take some processing, but it all makes sense when you watch the show. If you are a fan of “Supernatural”, I highly recommend this show. Picture “Supernatural” but with a badass female lead. She does find herself with two male suitors, but the love triangle is not the main focus at all, and is even called out within the show. Wynonna is a strong female character who exists perfectly without a boyfriend.
Wynonna’s little sister Waverly is a reason to watch the show herself. Though Waverly is not the Earp heir, she is still a vital member of the team, having spent most of her life researching the Earp curse and each of the revenants that plague the town of Purgatory. She is also a super adorable person, who is able to be strong and stand up for herself.
Wynonna’s little love triangle isn’t the only romance that occurs in the show. Throughout the series Waverly discovers that she has feelings for the newest police deputy, Nicole Haught. This relationship, aptly named Wayhaught, quickly became a fan favorite as it grew into one of the few good specks of LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream media. This show is all beautifully written and produced by Emily Andras, who is an awesome human being trying to make a great show that everyone can enjoy and feel represented in.
Many viewers may turn away from starting “Wynonna Earp” because of the seemingly strange premise, but once you sit down and dive in, you won’t be able to stop watching. Each episode sucks you in further and further. Sure, like every single show on television, it has its flaws, but the story is very interesting, and the storytelling is beautiful. “Wynonna Earp” was just added to Netflix on April 1st, and if you ever find yourself in a grey and gloomy weekend with nothing to do, bingeing this show is the perfect remedy.
