It's Never Too Late To Get Involved On Campus

Even as a Junior

It's Never Too Late To Get Involved On Campus

This year, I am a junior. You would think that after two years of attending my college, I would have my plate full of club meetings and campus events. But, this is actually my first year of getting involved on campus. This is my first year being committed to a club and going to campus hosted events and the only question I have is: Why didn’t I do this earlier?!

In my earlier years of college, the group I was friends with often shunned campus events and never went to more than three meetings of a club. Usually, I would follow suit because I wouldn’t want to miss out on what my friends were doing, which usually, was nothing special or to write home about.

This year, with only three semesters left of college, I’ve decided to immerse myself in campus events and stay committed to whatever I became involved in. It has been the best decision I’ve made!

I have joined two clubs. One of them being the campus entertainment network (CEN) the other being the Outing Club. CEN is awesome because it is a student run organization that is responsible for huge campus events such as the spring and fall concerts, spring weekend, random performers and speakers on campus, campus game nights and even movie nights. The Outing Club organizes outdoors adventures such as hiking, rock climbing, and ice skating. The clubs are allowing me to do things I normally would not be able to do, for free! It’s allowing me to meet new people with the same interests as me.

Last weekend I went to a coffeehouse event hosted by CEN. I was able to see a singer play awesome music. I would rather do this than waste money on alcohol for a blurry night that will only result in a headache the next day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
