One Last Time

It may be the last, but also the first of another chapter

Waking up at 5:30 in the morning to get ready for school. Driving to Dunkin’ Donuts to get your coffee for the day. Running from the parking lot to get into school on time. Talking to all your friends and teachers you didn’t see over the summer. Sitting in those uncomfortable desks waiting for your first period teacher to arrive.

It’s our LAST first day of school.

Standing amongst my classmates in the freezing cold bleachers cheering for our teammates as they score another touchdown. Watching the cheerleaders chant and perform their stunts. Listening to the marching band playing pep music. Feeling a sense of pride and happiness for your school.

It’s our LAST football game.

Painting our faces different colors and tying bandanas around our body. Screaming at the top of our lungs while we play tug of war. Making complete fools out of ourselves but loving every moment of it. Watching the look on the freshman’s faces when they announce that the seniors won.

It’s our LAST Spirit Night.

Getting your nails, hair and makeup done for the annual winter ball. Taking endless amounts of pictures to remember the night. Slow dancing with that special person who you hold dear in your heart. Dancing until your feet hurt and your eyes can’t stay open anymore.

It’s our LAST winter dance.

Getting on a plane with all of your classmates heading to the most exciting week. Spending time with your friends, making new memories and remembering old ones. Meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones. Feeling satisfied on the plane ride home.

It’s our LAST class trip.

Leaving school early to get your makeup and hair done. Putting on that dress or tuxedo and feeling confident. Arriving at your friend’s house to take pictures with all your friends. Dancing and singing in the limo, on the dance floor and just about anywhere it’s possible with all your friends. Coming home with the biggest smile on your face.

It’s our LAST prom.

Putting on that uniform and getting your equipment ready. Taking out your instrument and putting your formal attire on. Having a pep talk before you take the field. Having one last group conversation before you head onstage. Playing that game under the bright stadium lights. Performing your pieces under the stage lights.

It’s our LAST game or performance.

Putting on that cap and gown. Walking down the aisle and sitting next to your classmates. Waiting for your name to be called to receive your diploma. Accepting your diploma and shaking hands with your principal. Moving your tassel to the other side and throwing your cap in the air.

Walking through the empty hallways once filled with students. Looking at all the empty desks in the empty classrooms. Listening to the silence the vacant school creates. Gazing at the unfilled stadium, auditorium, and gymnasium.

It’s our LAST goodbye.

Even though our senior year hasn’t started yet, I want to make sure it’s something to remember. Our chapter is coming to an end, so let’s do it one LAST time.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
