A Letter To My Spring Semester Self

You finally made it to the home stretch.

Hey there,

So we made it. Seven semesters later, and we are finally to the home stretch. The finish line is in sight, but it still seems so unattainable. There are still thousands of pages of readings, hundreds of Scranton questions to get through, and so many papers to type up until you are actually done. But I have some ideas to make this semester the best one yet.

First of all, don’t get behind on your reading. You always make a vow to yourself that you will not let yourself fall behind and spend an entire Sunday reading six chapters, yet about five weeks later, I can always find you with a half-eaten bag of Doritos and your hand completely cramped from holding a highlighter in the exact same position all day. Don’t do this to yourself this semester! I mean it. And don’t just agree with me now and then actually do it. Just don’t this time! (or at least try)

Second of all, cook real food for yourself. I always see you with such high ambitions at the beginning of the semester. You'll be making zoodles and omelets and cooking chicken, and by week eight you are right back to only eating things you can find in the freezer section and cook in under four minutes. I totally agree with you, raw chicken is gross, and frozen pizzas are the bomb, but do me a favor? Get it together! This is your last semester to prove to yourself and everyone else that you can actually “adult.” Plus, you have that whole wedding thing of yours coming up, and I don’t think frozen chicken nuggets are going to get you any closer to fitting in that poofy white dress you have your eye on.

On that note, please go to the gym without complaining just once! Just one time I want to see you put your sneakers on without a tear in your eye. You have a goal and you are going to reach it, one painful elliptical cycle at a time. Plus, working out is supposed to make you happy, right? So next time you think you might cry into your midterm study guide, go for a run! (I don’t know if it works like that, but worth a try right??)

And between all of that hard work and studying and painful workouts, make some time to hangout with your best friends. Every day this semester is going to be a “last” for you and your crew, so it’s okay to get emotional (even if they all make fun of you). So in between reading and typing, watch movies in your pajamas, make cookies in that old oven, and take so many pictures. You’re going to want to remember every minute of this semester.

You’re almost done, kid. This semester is going to be tough and fun and stressful and amazing all at the same time. But I know you can do it, especially if you take some of my advice. Good luck, have fun, and I will see you in May!

Xoxo, Cassi B

(Oh, and p.s. stop spending all of your money on nachos and wine! I'm serious this time)

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
