My Last First IHSA Show

IHSA has given me so much to be thankful for.

My Last First IHSA Show
LEC EQ

This past weekend was a little bittersweet for me and my parents. It was the last, first IHSA show I am going to have as an undergrad. Lucky for me I didn't do the team my freshman year so I can do it for my fifth year here. For those who don't know how IHSA works, it is a collegiate horse show where you compete against other colleges in riding horses. We have multiple divisions, there are divisions for those who have never ridden a horse and divisions who have ridden for a good majority of their life. I fall somewhat in the middle of the spectrum, I ride in the Novice Flat and Fences division. Each ribbon placing is worth a certain amount of points:

- First place is 7 points

- Second place is 5 points

- Third place is 4 points

- Fourth place is 3 points

- Fifth place is 2 points

- Sixth place is 1 point

During this show I was also lucky enough to show both over fences and on the flat. Going into this season I only needed 12 more points on the flat and 19 more points over fences. My Saturday flat placing put me a solid first place away from qualifying for my last regionals. Sunday afternoon came and it was flat class time-- I drew the amazing horse named Felix! He was a dream to ride, super lofty trot and canter, easy to get into a shape, hardest thing about riding this horse was keeping him in front of my leg. He helped me receive my last 7 points and qualified me for regionals!!!!

(I may have been cheesing rather hard)

During my show weekend I also had a MASSIVE breakthrough in my over fences problems! Although I received a third both days over fences, I FINALLY got my position to get where it should be, something that I have been trying to accomplish for four years now! My team ended Reserve High Point Champion both days! We also had High Point Rider for the day on Sunday and the High Point Rider for the Weekend!

I can't thank my team and coach enough for helping me and encouraging me for the entire duration of my collegiate riding career!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
