In front of the world, he was a physician for the Olympics, to whom parents took their children for routine check-ups. Little did anybody know, or rather, little was anybody willing to acknowledge, the devil that lurked behind the curtains, and the extent of his horrendous abuse.
Woman after woman was assaulted, many of them minors. A few came forward with allegations of abuse shrouded in a facade of supposed health care, and their claims were often ignored. In 2004 (more than a decade and hundreds of women ago), a woman came forward with her story. After she came in for a spinal cord check, Nassar groped her under the ruse of a standard check-up. When she reported his actions to the police, he made a PowerPoint to explain his procedure (which wasn't given to another expert to check over), and the case was closed. He was allowed to continue being a doctor.
Years went by. A few more women came forward. None of the charges stuck. The devil's apprentice continued his vile actions behind the scenes, under his ruse, with authorities not so much as blinking an eye. More and more women were hurt. Justice grew weak under the toils of silence.
Now, in 2017, years and years later, the true colors of the man behind the curtain have finally been revealed. Over 160 women have testified against him, detailing their stories of assault and vulnerability, with over 250 coming forward with accusations. 250 human beings with 250 stories and histories, united against a common, vile foe.
He was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison. More are expected to be added.
With one devil soon to be behind bars, others should come next. How are you doing, Bill Cosby?
