Large Media Networks Do Not Tell Us Everything

There is more to the world than what's on television.

With all the terror attacks, the Syrian conflict, and the buzz around President-elect Donald Trump, I have noticed that there was barely any coverage of Standing Rock on large news outlets. This has got me to think about why you don't see specific incidents on networks like Fox and CNN. These networks are shorting out our knowledge of the world and inflating it with what they want us to know but there is more happening around us than we are aware. For example, any Greek life organization can raise thousands of dollars and only be picked up by the campus paper that no one reads or the local paper. When it comes to larger media outlets, the only coverage Greek life gets is the next big hazing scandal. Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't report this, because we should, but the world needs to see both sides of the coin.

Another thing I noticed about these news outlets is political bias. During this election cycle, anyone could tell what news stations supported Hillary Clinton and which ones supported Donald Trump. Either way, they told the news as it fit to their politics. If one could make the rival candidate look bad, they would. There is very few stations that give you the real news. If a law to make it illegal to own a gun with a criminal record were passed in California, you would either get news celebrating this liberal victory or news that condescends the law from conservative defeat.

Conveying facts over politics has seem to disappear from corporate media, however, we can still educate ourselves on the necessities and make an opinion for ourselves. Go beyond the scope of Fox and CNN and be more informed.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
