Based on the heading, you might be expecting tips on how to ace interview questions, what to wear for an interview or how to perfect your resume. However, none of those things matter unless you are genuine.

Genuine is defined on Dictionary.com as, “ possessing the claimed or attributed character, quality, or origin; not counterfeit; authentic; real."

I believe that I was chosen out of 100 applicants because I was genuine and let my uniqueness shine through. Let me explain. During my interview for this position, I was asked a variety of different questions. Some difficult, some creative, some tricky, but they all had one thing in common; they aimed to get to know who I was.

One of the first questions my interviewers asked me was, “on a scale from 1-10, how weird are you?” The first thought that ran through my head was to answer in a manner that would please my interviewers; however, I did quite the contrary. I answered as if I was talking to my best friend. I did the same thing on the questions that followed, I responded to the questions as openly and candidly as possible.

After my interview was completed and I was about to leave, the interviewer asked me how I felt that it had gone. I responded, “I answered every question honestly, acted myself and now the decision is out of my hands.” He smiled and said he would get back to me within the next week. The next day I found out that I received the position.

The point of this story is that in any situation, especially stressful or scary ones, you have to stay true to yourself. I could have easily tailored my answers to fit what I thought the company would want to hear, but then if I did get the position they would imagine me as someone that I am not. I am the biggest proponent of everyone embracing their uniqueness and in this case, it had some great perks to go along with it.

Stay honest, truthful and proud to be you and good things will come your way.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
