A Lana Winters Appreciation Post

American Horror Story

Even though I am a huge fan of American Horror Story, I am not always a huge fan of how the show writes its female characters. Constantly squabbling over a boy or power or stabbing each other in the back to get to the top, AHS writers often remove that special element from their women reducing them to nothing more than one dimensional caricatures. However, there is one person that has stood out among six seasons’ worth of characters: Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) from season two: Asylum. An ambitious reporter, Lana is determined to get the inside scoop on a recently captured, flesh-masked murderer, Bloody Face, but she ends up being committed against her will at Briarcliff because of her “deviant lifestyle.” Throughout the season, though, Lana never gives up, surviving unethical psychiatric treatments, being tortured by the real Bloody Face, as well as her wrongful imprisonment in the asylum. Here are fourteen Lana moments that prove she was the real star of American Horror Story: Asylum.

1. When she spoke a truth that applies to Briarcliff (and, well, the rest of the world)

2. When she learned how Briarcliff operated

3. When she said and did what she needed to in order to survive

4. When Lana wasn't sure she could survive Thredson's torture for much longer, but she persevered and escaped because...

5. She is so gosh darn plucky

6. When she wanted to end Thredson's life by bashing his skull in, and hey, the girl had her reasons

7. When she said what we were all thinking when Sister Jude broke the ONLY RECORD BRIARCLIFF OWNED

8. When she refused to let male detectives marginalize her and her traumatic journey

9. When she defended her son against a schoolyard bully despite wanting no contact with him

And then there are moments when she doesn't even need any words:

10. When the Mother Superior helps her escape Briarcliff, Lana flips off a disbelieving Thredson from the taxi cab, mocking him with the only evidence tying him to the Bloody Face murders

11. When Lana holds Thredson at gunpoint and decides to blow his brains out right before the cops arrive

12. When she breastfed her rapist's baby

13. And when Lana elegantly faced the paparazzi after visiting her lover's grave

And finally,

14. When she dropped this gem

gossip girl

On the Upper East Side, Blair Waldorf is an icon. She's what every girl aspires to be. She's beautiful, confident, and can handle any obstacle that life throws at her. Sure, she may just be a television character. But for me, she's a role model and theres a lot that can be learned from Queen B.

The Perks of Being a Girl

“I just want you to know that you’re very special… and the only reason I’m telling you is that I don’t know if anyone else ever has.”

As frustrating and annoying as it can be, being a girl is really awesome. We are beautiful inside and out. Not a lot of people may see that, but girls have a ton of amazing qualities.

We have unique flirting skills.

Us girls have a significant way to flirt with other people. Even when we say the most random or awkward things, we have a way of making everything sound cute and planned. It’s just a gift; we’re good like that.

Whether you are writing a ten-page paper, studying for a biology exam, or struggling through math homework, you somehow find the strength to get to the library to get it all done. Let's just say you have a lot of different thoughts that run through your head during the many hours you spend in the lovely library.

We Heart It

Over the past decade, television has undergone a very crucial transition: the incorporation of female lead characters. Since it's a known fact that girls actually do run the world (Beyonce said so herself), it's time for the leading ladies of the small screen to get some credit. Without these characters, women would still be sitting in the background of our favorite shows. These women are not only trailblazers for female empowerment, but role models for women worldwide. With that, here are 15 of the smartest, sassiest ladies gracing our screens that remind us that women do, indeed, rule:

If you are like me, you have an interesting personality. Basically, you love to be sassy and snarky, gossip, and act like a total bitch (not really), but deep down, you are actually a very genuinely nice person. The idea of actually hurting someone truly makes you feel bad, and you probably have never actually hurt someone’s feelings because your kindness always shines through, even if you do not want it to. Not sure exactly what I would call this type of personality, but if you identify with it, here are some feelings you can undoubtedly relate to.
