Like many Americans, I think the Super Bowl is like a national holiday. Perhaps you got to go out to your friend's, have a fun drinking game and eat pizza until you passed out. Maybe you paid attention closely to the game, because you actually cared about the outcome. Patriots, Falcons, overtime... what was the highlight of the show?
Lady Gaga has the honor of having the second most watched Super Bowl Half Time show in history, behind Katy Perry's performance. Her performance was fireand she was so spot on about how she wanted to have her performance executed and what she wanted to do. Her outfit changes are spectacular, her dance moves were on point and her vocals were out of this world. This thirteen minute performance allowed Gaga to show that she still has that star quality that she gave us when she first broke out onto the scene back in 2009. So, why am I writing this article?
Apparently, people have had difficulty accepting the fact that Lady Gaga is indeed human and has some flaws. The viewers of the Super Bowl couldn't just enjoy her performance, but rather they had to take the time to criticize her body shape and apparently, her 'stomach.' One twitter user even said, "I was expecting a guest performance. All I got was Lady Gaga's gut." First of all, that comment is extremely disgusting. Secondly, she has been battling anorexia and bulimia since she was fifteen, and she's now 30. Third, who even are you? You have to stop and think to yourself, "Did I make this negative comment about her while I'm sitting here on my third beer, stuffing my face with nachos?" Or perhaps you had the thought, "When was the last time I was at the gym?" Seems a little hypocritical, don't you think?
But Lady Gaga is having the last laugh. Gaga's music and its sales are up by 900%, her recent album, Joanne, selling copies left and right and she just announced a world tour! Gaga has always been open about the fact that she has struggled with depression, her weight and pressure of society. But what I think it rather hilarious, with all of the views of the haters on her, she kinda already wrote her clapback song to her haters. That song came out six years ago, so it was almost like she was seeing into the future.
As a woman, and as someone who has struggled with her weight and body issues for many years, I'm proud of Gaga. I'm proud of the fact that she didn't give a damn about what she looked like; she had a job to do and got it done. She was entertaining. She dominated. She didn't care what you thought. She was there to do what a pop star is supposed to do: entertain you. Oh, and if the first song of haters wasn't enough for you, she has another one, too.
All I have to say is, rock on, Gaga.
