I was scrolling on Facebook when I came across an Odyssey article called "Ladies, Nike Shorts And Leggings Are For The Gym, Nowhere Else." Written by Rachel Kiser, a fellow writer at Virginia Tech, it goes into detail about why women should "grow up" and start dressing better.
But hey, here's what we're not going to do: police women on what they wear.
In a society where women are already constantly told how they should or shouldn't look, it's disappointing that another woman herself would try to do the same.
In the article, Kiser talks about her daily routine where she spends extensive time getting ready to look and feel beautiful. That is great, and I am glad she does what makes her happy - but it is NOT the same for everyone.
Not every woman needs to wear the fanciest clothes or have a face full of makeup to feel beautiful - society already tells us that we need to do these things in order to be considered acceptable or "pretty," and it is tiring, because we should not have to spend all our times constantly pleasing other people.
I understand that, for certain events or places, there are certain dress codes - but when it's a casual setting, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing what you feel most comfortable in.
Instead of telling women out there that they should only dress a certain way, let's start promoting the idea that women ARE allowed to wear whatever they feel like. They're allowed to be themselves and express themselves however they want.
So, ladies, wear that old high school t-shirt if you feel like. Wear a cute dress if you feel like. Do what makes you happy, not what someone else tells you to do.
As for me, I will happily stay going around in Nike shorts and leggings, and I'll have absolutely no regrets about it.
