The fashion world, as we all know is one that is constantly changing and morphing into whatever society says it needs to be. 20 years ago, it was common for men and women to walk around with flared jeans and with shirts that looked like the dryers had shrunk them just a fraction while sporting your wedge flip flops. Yes, the fashion of the 1990’s and the 2000’s were something to brag about, however, they were nothing compared to the flapper dresses of the roaring 20’s or even the long, floor-length dresses of the “olden days”.
While fashion has evolved a great deal throughout time, the fashion industry has become more and more immodest. Sadly, the time of the year that immodest clothing makes its presence known more is when summer comes around, or when the wonderful holiday of Halloween approaches. Every year, little boys and girls dress like teenage mutant ninja turtles, puppy dogs, princess’, power rangers, or whatever they want to be for one night; and as each child gets older, they no longer wear their matching Garanimals outfits, into more modern-day clothing’s that has no business being seen on little children.
I feel as if the very wise, Cady Heron from Mean Girls said it best “"Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it”. Since when did the concept of dressing up like a “slut” become an acceptable form of fashion that society stands by and accepts?
As a society, we have allowed the once unacceptable to become the social norm; what we now expect to see on a daily basis as a form of fashion on the female body. My concern is that by allowing society to continue down this path, respect for ourselves, ladies, will no longer be what is respected in society, but rather seen as a hindrance towards one own self-development. Oh, you want to dress in a skirt that is knee length? Then you must be a prude. Covering up your breasts? Then you are a tease. If a woman is being modest for herself, she is seen in a negative and not a positive, when it should be the opposite, and this only further damages a woman’s self-worth.
As a society as a whole, we have to stop accepting the new standard. We have to be willing to stand up for our beliefs and learn to respect ourselves more ladies. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body”.
Ladies, while we might want to wear that awesome mini skirt, we need to remember that being modest is hottest. We attract the type of men we seek for, and if we seek men who only want someone who wants the less than modest version of ourselves, than lades, you do not need them. Period.
Modest is hottest, and let us not forget that ladies. Be the type of woman that you want your future son(s) to marry.
