I recently went to a Bucknell women's basketball game. (They won 67-36!) It was a fantastic game and a lot of fun to watch. It was just as exciting and as successful as the men's basketball game that I had gone to the night before. (They won 75-62!) The team played great and 100 percent outplayed the competition!
I was really frustrated, though, when I looked around the arena. There was a significantly fewer amount of fans at the women's game! Why is it that women's games have fewer supporters than at men's games in a majority of sports? The games are just as exciting--sometimes even more! The women's team is just as good as the men's team in the league. The women's and men's teams were both the Patriot League regular season champions last year. How is it that the men's team receives more support when they are equally as good?
I have to commend the men's team on being great supporters. I saw 90 percent of the team at the women's game on Thursday night. I am highly upset, though, that the student section was next to empty. It is highly disappointing to see such a low turnout of students to the women's game. I also don't get why the game was so early. Maybe there were travel reasons for the sake of the other team, but even then, why was the game at 6 p.m. instead of the typical 7 p.m. time of most games?
According to a PBS article, 40 percent of all athletes are women. Why, then, do they only receive a measly 4 percent of all media coverage? It is a widely known fact that LeBron James is one of the best players of all time in the NBA, but does anyone know who the heavy hitters are in the WNBA? Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury is a three time Olympic basketball champion and is arguably one of the best guards in professional basketball. Does anyone ever hear anything about her on the news? What about Maya Moore? Maya Moore is one of the best forwards in professional basketball. She plays for the Minnesota Lynx and has two Olympic gold medals. Has she been covered on the news? SportsCenter? No. I have not seen an advertisement for a WNBA game on TV in all of my years of watching TV.
It is an absolute disappointment. I urge you all to be aware of this and GO OUT AND SUPPORT THE WOMEN'S TEAMS IN YOUR AREA OR AT YOUR SCHOOL.
WE ARE ATHLETES TOO.
WE NEED JUST AS MUCH SUPPORT AS ANY MEN'S TEAM DOES!
