An L.A. Road Trip, Day 1

This spring break, my friends and I decided to head on a little road trip to California. This would be my first road trip to California and there were many things that I learned in this adventure.

In our itinerary for the first day, all we had planned was the actual road trip. We squeezed 5 people and their luggage into the car and started the journey promptly at 8 a.m. towards Los Angeles. The night before, everyone in the group contributed to a Spotify road trip playlist. In addition, everyone in the group brought along snacks and condiments so that we could all cook instead of spending money on food there.

There was not much traffic on the Saturday morning when we started and our Airbnb could not be checked in until 3 p.m. so we made a stop at Taco Bell in Indio for lunch followed by Total Wine in the outskirts of L.A. We arrived at our Airbnb located on some hills opposite of the famous Hollywood Hills around 3 just as our hosts were finishing up the cleaning process.

We then took some time to move out things in and try out the television and unpack our clothes, take a shower, and use the bathroom. Our Airbnb was very confusing and had six locks to get into the actual living room. Before leaving the house, everyone learned how to open each lock and practiced so if one of us got separated, we would not be locked out.

Being underage, I couldn't go out to clubs and bars with my friends that night so I called my friends studying in L.A. and went out exploring with them. My friends went grocery shopping and bought a list of ingredients to cook with. Some of the items that were bought were tortillas, pasta, sauce, beans, vegetables, yogurt, bread, bagels, cream cheese, fruits, and alcohol.

While my friends were out, I went shopping at the Beverly Center. The parking here is great and was only about $2 for the amount of time we stayed there. I bought some wonderful clothes in the shopping center and then went to Downtown L.A. near the Staples Center for dinner at The Yard House. I ordered a vegetarian burger with fries and my friend ordered fish and chips.

I then went back to her place and watched television while catching up on our separate lives. After that, I went back to my apartment and called it a night on my first night in California. In the meanwhile, my friends went out to a bar called Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville followed by a karaoke bar nearby. They had a marvelous time. One person in our group volunteered to drive and none of us had to deal with any surge prices with the Oscars happening nearby.

And this was just the beginning.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
