I walked into the theater with my boyfriend, totally unprepared for the spectacle I was about to witness. La La Land, a movie about dreamers, lovers and art-makers became my favorite movie within the first 5 minutes. Here are some of the reasons I love La La Land: the actors, score, choreography, themes and cinematography simply amazed me.
1. Emma Stone
Emma Stone is one of my most favorite actresses. She is beautiful and so talented. I had no idea she could sing!! Her portrayal of Mia, an aspiring actress trying to choose between her dream or her man, was utterly beautiful, relatable and expressive.
2. Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling is one of my most favorite actors. His dedication and determination was impeccably demonstrated in this movie. He spent months learning how to expertly play the piano so that he could accurately portray the role of Sebastian, a lonely yet wonderfully talented jazz musician. I also had no idea that he could sing!! He truly ventured out of his comfort zone to explore the theatrical realm of hollywood, which deserves much applause.
3. Music
Let me just say: claps to the music directors, writers and producers of this amazing score. The music is absolutely glorious. The lively, upbeat attitude of jazz added so much character to the movie and to the lead roles. Also, this movie is a musical, so following the theatrical side of music and dance numbers was brilliant and quite enjoyed by any and all audiences.
4. Choreography
The inclusion of tap dancing and other dance forms and spectacular choreography added amazingly vibrant life to the movie. Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and the rest of the cast of La La Land truly amazed me and inspired me with their dance moves, especially in the opening number. When the opening number began, I was in shock at how impressive the dancing and singing was.
5. Messages
a) Making Difficult Choices
Throughout the entire movie, the main characters are forced to make major decisions. Sometimes the main characters chose each other, and other times they chose themselves or their dreams. The message is that making choices is hard. They struggle so much on what decisions they should make, and sometimes they feel as though they aren't loving their partner well. This is difficult for both Mia and Sebastian, but at the end of the day, they still chose to keep trying to make their relationship work.
b) Pursuing Your Dreams
Sebastian encourages Mia in following her dreams as a play write and an actress, and she encourages him to pursue his love of jazz. Mia struggled through countless auditions, many setbacks and a disaster of a performance until she was finally ready to give up her dream, but then she became a huge star in Paris. Sebastian struggled between making enough money and following his true passions, but because he sacrificed a little bit, he was able to finally accomplish his dream of opening a jazz club. Sebastian pushed Mia when she wanted to quit. Mia tried to bring Sebastian back to who he was when he was getting wrapped up in something that he knew he didn't fully enjoy. If they had never met or had a relationship, they both would have given up on their dreams.
c) The Good and the Bad Times in Relationships
Sebastian and Mia have a beautiful love story. They randomly keep meeting up over and over again, and they share beautiful date nights and lovely dinners and a movie date and a romantic dance in a lovely museum. They have the kind of relationship that every girl dreams of. But wait -- they fight a lot. When they first met, Sebastian rudely brushed past her as she tried to compliment him. They are two totally different people. They sing a whole song about how much they don't like each other. They end up being far apart from each other and become terribly lonely trying to make a long distance relationship work. And yet, isn't that the beauty of their love story? They are real. They struggle. But they love each other no matter what.
d) Accepting Your Past
At the end of the movie, the now famous actress Mia and her new husband walk into Sebastian's new jazz club. Mia and Sebastian make eye contact, and the movie rushes through their lives if everything had gone perfectly right and if they had stayed together forever. They look back at all of the "what ifs." And then as Mia sheds a tear, Sebastian nods his head, accepting his choices, his past and his life now. Although they both flash through memories and what if scenarios, at the end of the movie, they accept what happened, because it made them who they are today.
6. Cinematography
If you haven't already, look at the pictures in this article. The film aspect of this movie is fantastic. The colors, lighting, setting, perspectives, everything is spot on. Claps to the cinematographers, who are often behind the scenes and unrecognized.
GO SEE LA LA LAND WHILE IT IS STILL IN THEATERS.
