What Your KSU Parking Selection Says About You

We all know that parking at KSU can be a nightmare, but it's how you handle it that defines you.

What Your KSU Parking Selection Says About You

Since the merger of Kennesaw State University with Southern Polytechnic State University, the already abysmal parking on the Kennesaw campus has become infinitely worse. The hardest part of going to class is no longer the fact that you're hungover for your 8 a.m. on a Wednesday, it's the fact that now you have to fight for parking.

Those little parking decals on the bottom left hand corner of our windshields have become the catalysts for parking wars, as we all fight for limited parking with an abundance of registered parkers. But while we drive past our fellow commuters, hoping they don't get a spot before us, we inadvertently check their windshield to see where they are parking and make our snap judgments, because deep down we know that where we park defines us as students.

Central Parking

You're probably a go-with-the-flow type of person. Unless you're a nursing or business major, you know that Central isn't all that centrally located, but you don't mind. You didn't choose this parking zone for the convenience, you chose it because it was the largest deck. You don't want to deal with the hassle of the other parking options, so you went with the most popular and widely chosen space. Who cares about the line when you're almost assured a parking spot?

West Parking

You are definitely a social science major of some sort or you would never have selected West. With only three levels of parking in the deck, you know that if you don't get to campus at least 30 minutes early, you will either have to potentially park in the Church Lot (and hike to class) or fight like hell for a spot. Even though you dread going to campus every day, you kind of enjoy the fight for a spot, especially if it ends in you parking in the deck.

East Parking

You are a unique type of person, an in-betweener if you will. You are selective enough in your parking that you don't want to just park in Central and wait in that line, but you're not quite the fighter that West Deckers are. Because your deck is not as big as Central, but still significantly larger than West, you understand that you may have to park by Waffle House but that's a risk you're willing to take.

Town Point and Free Parking

You want to save some money and I'm sorry, but you don't love yourself. You are not interested in driving to campus and/or getting stuck in the parking congestion that is KSU. When selecting your parking, you probably think, "Why would I drive to campus when I can just ride B.O.B. for free?" Because, you is smart, you is kind and you is important. You deserve a real parking spot; join the fight for one!

North and South Parking

You are probably an on-campus resident so morning parking doesn't even phase you. Your car has been in the same spot last night and you don't mind watching the world burn as the rest of us scramble to make it to class on time. Since you live on campus you are guaranteed a spot, so you never understand what the rest of us are constantly complaining about.

Whether you notice it or not, our dedication to our parking has become an integral characteristic of who we are as a person. Even though we love to hate it, the parking spaces (or lack thereof) have made us stronger. How has KSU's parking affected you as a person?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

1. People assume you are mad all of the time.

2. Ten out of ten times you will give off an intimidating impression to others.

3. People do not acknowledge your feelings because you "do not have any."

4. Constantly being exhausted from trying to smile and not look like a witch.

5. And on the rare occasion your facial expressions show how happy you are, your friends think you are going crazy.

6. Each of your friends has said "I thought you were so mean when I first met you" at some point.

7. Then they follow that by saying "you are just hard to read."

8. So naturally if people do not know you they just assume you are a snob.

9. And when you are actually mad, your facial expressions are horrifying.

10. In the end you always look like you are judging people, when in reality people are ALWAYS judging you.
