I'm sure many of you are familiar with the presence of Greek Life here at Kennesaw State. Often times when I'm walking to class, I'm stopped by a Delta Chi and given a lovely flower or approached by a Zeta Tau Alpha with a pink ribbon. Although I'm not involved in Greek Life, I understand that it requires a lot of dedication and hard work. I applaud those who take it seriously and believe it's important to look past the stereotypical-sorority-girl image that's been fed into our brains.
I was very upset to hear that Jennifer Morales, former Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, was arrested on charges of "misusing student organization money". For those of you who are unfamiliar with this position, she is typically the person sororities and fraternities report to, which gives her an enormous amount of power. After an extensive investigation, Morales was fired on March 30 and arrested on April 13, when she posted her $30,000 bond the same day. Something tells me this was not the first time she embezzled, but who am I to judge?
One thing's for sure: if you're gonna go Greek, it ain't cheap. There are monthly dues, initiation fees, gifts for your big/little, the list goes on. I'm sure many brothers and sisters are outraged that their money may not have even gone to the organization, but into the pocket of someone they thought they trusted. Given the fact that her charge was a felony, this was a considerable amount of cash we're talking about. She certainly didn't give a hooty-hoo about KSU.
Come on, KSU. I know you are better than this. Sororities and fraternities deal with enough criticism on their own, this is the last thing they want to hear. The whole situation is just plain embarrassing and only hurts the reputation of our university. Please be more cautious when selecting the next director so I don't have to sit here writing an article speaking for the Greek community (who is not allowed to comment) again.
