Former carpenter, Youtube prankster, and now rapper Kristen Hanby came from humble beginnings in a small town called Jersey, in between England and France. With almost 2 million fans on Youtube, 4 million on Facebook, and almost 6 million on Instagram, there's nothing that this amusing, carefree nonstop family prankster won't do, from pieing his family members to doing viral challenges with his grandma, all in a charming, kindhearted way. I talked to Kristen about his motivation for making videos, his inspiration for creating content, and much more:
James: How did you get started? Who inspired you to start making videos? What was life like before you blew up?
Kristen: Well, I've always been that kid who has too much energy, always been that kid who got kicked out of class for being too loud and always been that kid that loved being crazy and different, so this is a big reason as to why I make crazy videos. I used to watch a vine star called MightyDuck. He was the first person I ever saw make those kinds of videos and he was epic. He used to prank his friends and family. One day I recorded a video where I pranked my mum and I put it on my personal Facebook. It got like 500 likes and I was blown away, like wow, that's epic. So I decided to make a Facebook page which I got a lot of stick for and people hating on because I started making these awful sketches. I still cringe watching them back now.
Before all of this happened, I worked on a building site for six years doing carpentry. I went straight into it two weeks after college. It was fun but so hard at the same time. I was working 8 am - 5 pm Monday to Friday. Life was still fun though, and my family and I were still crazy as ever.
James: How would you describe your content? How does your content differ from other pranksters?
Kristen: The best way I would describe my content is fun for people to watch. I never post videos that will offend people. I always make the joke fair so that no one is solely getting laughed at. I only give as much as I receive, so I feel like I make content which appeals to a very large audience, especially with the content being with my family. I think people love to watch and see a family being super close, yet so crazy.
James: What made you decide to want to do rapping too? What's the process like for creating a song? Is it hard managing both the music and pranks?
Kristen: Funnily enough I actually wanted to start music way before I made videos. However, I was too scared to try something like that, considering I had no following and was held back simply by fear and the thoughts of others. So the moment my videos blew up and grew me massively as a person, I stopped fearing opinions anymore. Hate doesn't bother me in any way whatsoever now. I ignore any bad energy thrown my way and only focus on positive things. That's the way I will always be now so that being said, I thought it was time to try to entertain the world and grow a fan base with my music too which personally I think is going amazing.I've only been in a music studio a few times but I love recording and writing my own music unlike 99% of people. I tend to freestyle my music and feel the vibe of a beat, instead of being sat there overthinking and losing the feel of the song. When I'm freestyling, I know I'll be speaking about the right kinda stuff.
Trying to fit music in between pranks is actually better than people would think. Trying to be creative in more ways than one, opens up your mind so much leading to epic things happening. I've also been working on developing apps and getting into the fitness industry, the more the better I think!
James: Do you enjoy doing pranks with your family or pranks in public better?
Kristen: Family and friends videos are so much more enjoyable, so much so that I don't do public videos anymore. That's a thing of the past. People enjoy watching content where there is a relationship or connection. I feel that those kinds of videos have so much more of a friendly vibe.
James: What's the process of coming up with prank video ideas like?
Kristen: When I say this I mean it: I will never run out of ideas. I write down over twenty video ideas in one day sometimes. I'm going to tell you my secret, which I have never told anyone that I do: I go onto google, search 'random word generator' and keep randomizing words until a crazy fun word pops up and a viral video comes to mind. It works every time. I work and run all my social platforms myself and come up with and record every video myself. It's the best way to be, I think.
James: What's a typical day for you like?
Kristen: My life has drastically changed in the past 6 months. It used to consist of a lot of partying but I haven't partied for nearly six months. Now, I wake up at 7 am and workout every morning, then get on with my day, plan and record videos, network, and hustle.
James: Have you always been this crazy? Is there anything you won't do?
Kristen: Let's have some fun with this. You can dare me to do anything and see for yourself if I do it, sound fun?
James: How do you stay motivated making content?
Kristen: My main motivation is how many people message me on a daily basis, saying how much they love me, how much I help them, how much my videos save them and so on. My videos have such an impact on people's lives and that will never stop.
James: What's running through your head when you are doing a prank?
Kristen: When I first started pranks, I used to hate the nerves and the feeling it would give me but you get over that eventually. I think it builds you as a person with confidence and not caring whatsoever what people think about you.
James: Has a prank ever gone wrong or gone too far?
Kristen: Pranks have gone wrong so many times. I've been punched and got in trouble with the police when I first started, which is the reason I stopped making public videos.
James: What has been your favorite prank to pull?
Kristen: My favorite prank has to be my fake ballsack prank, that was so epic, haha!
James: What are some things about you that your fans might not know from watching your videos?
Kristen: Some things my fans might not know about me are first, at night when everyone's asleep, I'm actually a part-time superhero. that's my biggest secret! Okay but nah, I think my fans know pretty much everything. My whole life is online.
James: What's the plan for the future? What are your goals moving forward?
Kristen: So, my future plans are to have my own TV show, go on a world tour for my music, and be in the movies. Literally, anything that you can think of! I want to do and try everything.
