Konnecting with the Keating Five

We all can relate to the characters from "How to Get Away with Murder."

Shonda Rhimes has done it yet again with her hit series, "How to Get Away with Murder." With its unpredictable plot twists and complicated conflicts, Rhimes gives us a glimpse into the life we all wish we secretly had. Even though Annalise and her team are constantly living on edge, I know that I would love to be a part of the Keating Five, regardless. Sometimes, I get so into the show that even I believe that getting away with murder would be possible.

You can always count on an unexpected turn as each Thursday night approaches, while simultaneously sitting on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who's body is rolled up in the carpet or laying underneath the sheet on the gurney.

One thing, though, that we can't forget is that the show would not be the same without the cast members. I mean, I know that Annalise Keating isn't a real person, but if I saw Viola Davis walking on the side of the road, I'd anticipate Bonnie and Frank walking close behind.

Therefore, I thought it would be interesting to see how you can find a little bit of yourself in each of the characters. Their personalities have come to define them, but even their flaws are what allows us to connect to any character on a reality drama, especially the Keating 5 and Annalise on HTGAWM.

1. Laurel Castillo

The unpredictable secret weapon behind all of the cases and conflicts that the Keating Gang get themselves into. Even though she is quiet and constantly under the radar, Laurel always seems to be the secret weapon. She is secretly the smartest in the room, and we all wish that the talent of deception (when necessary) could be as strong in us as it is in her.

2. Michaela Pratt

Number two of the Keating Five also represents the strong girl power that we yearn to be a part of. Michaela is ambitious and an overachiever. Even though she gets on all of our nerves, she reminds me of myself (and I'm sure a few of you). I hate to admit it, but Michaela is the star student who is always first. She is the first to raise her hand and probably the first to crack under pressure. Being good is just in your blood.

3. Connor Walsh

While some may see him as the male counterpart to Michaela, Connor has showed us time after time that he is a smart ass, who at times seem to highlight more of the latter part of the word. He is, however, our favorite character to hate and secretly love all at the same time. And, we can't forget that he is half of our favorite HTGAWM couple.

4. Asher Millstone

Ah, Asher. I can't help but laugh out loud when I think about him. Even though he is the typical country club Ivy Leaguer, Asher has come to be the primary source of comedic relief (even if he doesn't try to be). Although it may be difficult to connect with Asher on a personality level, we can all vibe with him when it comes to his killer dance moves.

5. Wes Gibbins

The puppy dog who needs protection. The natural born leader who secretly hates to lead. Wes Gibbins is the quiet, yet dependable underdog that Annalise turns to when things go bad. He always seems to be acting suspicious and looking into leads of his most recent conspiracy, but he is also a trustworthy guy who we all wish we could be friends with.

6. Annalise Keating

Finally, the Queen. Annalise is the definition of the Mother Lioness who protects her cubs. She is glamorous, yet mysterious. Fearful, but passionate. Honestly, I don't think there is much more to say other than the fact that she is the ultimate spirit animal that we wish we could channel in times of need.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
