You Know You're From Knoxville When

Knoxville may just be the best city in Tennessee...

You Know You're From Knoxville When

I am proud to be from Knoxville; we have a lot of good resturants, loving people and well, the Vols. There are a few key things that Knoxville has embedded in us all.

1. If you call Knoxville "Knox Vegas".

Urban Dictionary defines "Knox Vegas" as, "known as Knoxville, Tennessee, Knox Vegas is the title given to this city in eastern Tennessee by its young adult population, mostly consisting of college students at the University of Tennessee. This is both a play on words with the similarities of 'vegas' and 'vile', and it adds to a notion of fun times to be had by its inhabitants. The sporting events, arts/music scene, and bar life make this medium-sized city seem to be more Vegas-like in its appeal."
I call it Knox Vegas from time to time, and I'm not even a bit ashamed.

2. You have a "tri-star" sticker on your car.

This one might be farfetched but, as a fan of Tennessee all together we have to support the tri-star. It supports Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville, since they're the three biggest cities in the state. It's kind of the Tennessee flag as well!

3. You love Peyton Manning at all costs.

You loved Peyton during his UT days, Colts days, even Broncos days. All of Peyton's days we loved and supported him. He continues to "give Tennessee his all."

4. You were saddened when Boomsday was canceled.

It was the one day of the year where you could watch fireworks off the gorgeous water. The night was full of funnel cakes and good friends. It was a sad Labor Day weekend whenever it was canceled.

5. You spend way too much time in Turkey Creek.

What is there not to love about Turkey Creek? There's a Chick-fil-A, Altar'd State, Pinnacle, Target, and Kinnucan's all in one area? Why would I ever need to go or spend my money anywhere else?!

6. Tailgating is a family event.

Set up the tent and portable grill, it's football time in Tennessee! You spend the whole day surrounded by good food, cornhole, family, and fellow Volunteer fans! Saturday on Rocky Top is literally Heaven on Earth!

7. You say "Go Vols" instead of "Goodbye".

Any time of the year, it is appropriate to say "Go Vols" as a salutation. And usually, the other person says it back. It's a mutual and happy goodbye.

8. You wear short sleeves and snow boots in the same week.

What more can I say? Knoxville weather is nuts. One day it's 65 degrees and the next there's an inch of snow on the ground. We've all accepted it, but seriously you have to be a Knoxvillian to know how crazy our weather really us.

9. Tomato Head.

Well, it's a Knoxville owned restaurant that is seriously so good I wake up in the middle of the night and crave it. Their pizza is to die for and they are also vegetarian-friendly! I couldn't live anywhere else just because they don't have Tomato Head.

10. Volunteer Spirit

When the Smoky Mountains wildfires happened it was the Volunteer Spirit that helped and donated time, necessities, and prayers to all the people affected by it. Volunteer Spirit is something everyone from Knoxville has.

These are just 10 few things that make up a Knoxvillian! I am proud of my city. Keep Knoxville scruffy! Go Vols!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
