The Truth About Stress In College

Are you stressed? If your answer is yes, then welcome to adulthood, and if your answer is no, then you are probably too stressed to even know that you are stressed. Congratulations!

You are probably reading this article with your face resting on your hands and eyes squinting because you have been staring at the screen of your laptop too long doing your assignment, which is probably due tonight. Or you were so stressed doing assignments that you came across this article while googling "deep quotes about stress" because you want a caption for your black-and-white Instagram photo.

As we grow older and work towards independence, stress becomes a daily part of our lives. See those dark circles and bags under your eyes? Welcome to the stress club. You are stressed because you have six pages of essay due or you have three exams next week. You then blame yourself for procrastinating too much and stress yourself and then you get stressed because you are stressed, and in this whole process of stressing, you are past your due date. And there you go, you are stressed yet again! The cycle is eternal.

And look at us trying to be adults and failing so beautifully that it makes you want to cry. Remember the days when you were just a little kid without a hint of what responsibilities were and you were playing with the moon thinking it followed you everywhere? But then at some point when you went shopping with your parents and they did not buy you that Barbie set you saw in ads while watching Pogo, or a toy gun, didn't you wish you were an adult so that you could buy anything and everything with your money? And now you are an adult wishing you were a kid again. That's life. Actually, that's human because we are never pleased with what we have and we are suckers for more.

Now that you are an adult studying in college, you can't wait to finish college and get a degree. Always be careful of what you wish for. What about after college? Do you get a job or do you get your life together as soon as you graduate? The odds of uncovering water in a desert is higher than you getting a job after graduation. Just kidding. But remember that life is not easy, and you have to work hard for what you want. And yes, remember you are causing yourself stress. Try to avoid procrastinating as much as possible. Just take a deep breath and believe you can.

Everybody around you is stressed. We are a big family. You are not the only one, my friend. Know that everyone wears a mask and within that they hide a lot. While you must be thinking no one is as miserable as you, and you just don't seem to get your life together, remember that somewhere out there there is a person pulling a door that says push.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
