Five facts about me:
1. I am from Minnesota.
2. I attend the University of Kansas.
3. I am 18 years old.
4. I am an only child.
5. I have over 200 sorority sisters.
This is where I am. These things, I know for certain. Where I am going, I don't know, and that's okay.
I am constantly being asked questions about my future. What are you doing this weekend? What are you doing this summer? Where will you attend graduate school? Where will you live when you graduate? What job will you have in 10 years?
To me, all I hear is: "Don't tell me about what you've done, tell me where you're going."
I'm sorry, I just can't do that. I know that everyone is all about planning for the future, and don't get me wrong, I am a big planner. But I am also proud of where I am and who I have become.
Why can't we talk about that? Why can't we talk about how successful we were in high school, or the job we had last summer, or even the mistakes we made in middle school?
No, I don't like to dwell on the past. But, the past is what got me here. I wouldn't be the same person I am today without the fight with my best friend that taught me about communication, or the great score I received on an AP test that got me out of difficult college classes.
I can tell you all about them today. I can tell you about why I chose this school, the classes I am taking, and the sorority I joined. Let's talk about that. Let's stop focusing on all of the difficult decisions ahead, and instead celebrate all of the ones we have already made. Let's talk about why we are who we are, and how we got to where we are.
Instead of constantly worrying about the future, let's all focus on talking about the now. I don't know where I'm going, but I do know where I am.
And for me, in this moment, that's more than enough.
