You Know You're From Jax When...

There are many unique places that students are flocking home to for the summer. However, there is one place that is weird, unique and still somehow amazing. That place is Jacksonville, Florida. And to be more specific…. Duval County.

You know you're from Jacksonville when…

1. You see statues of manatees and jaguars all throughout town on your drive home. They are everywhere. Literally, everywhere.

2. You find that you have a ridiculous amount of Jacksonville Jaguars paraphernalia even though the team isn't that good, but you've got Jags pride, many jerseys and at least one foam finger. #DTWD (Duval 'Til We Die)

3. You understand the phrase “Dirty Duval" and all that it entails.

4. You think of The St. John's Town Center as Jax's “rodeo drive" and when a big new store is built, it might as well be front-page news. (Nordstrom was the highlight of 2014)

5. People can't drive. You think I'm kidding, but I swear the only criteria to get a license at the DMV is to recite the alphabet or something because people CANNOT DRIVE HERE. Remember when your mom taught you defensive driving, and told you to “drive like everyone else is crazy"…that applies here.

6. Your fun fact is that you're from the largest city in the US land-wise. (Or at least it used to be….THANKS A LOT ALASKA.)

7. You know everything about everyone. Despite the fact that our city is huge, it feels like a small town. Everyone has at least heard of “such and such family" or what happened to ______.

8. The weather is completely and reliably unpredictable. It will be 80 degrees and sunny outside at 11 am and cloudy and rainy at 3 pm. Floridians always have an umbrella and sunglasses with them because you never know.

9. You can get anywhere in 20 minutes…. Jax Beach, Ponte Vedra, Ortega, Riverside, Southside, Downtown and anywhere else you can imagine.

10. You totally fan-girled when this song came out. Don't lie, you know you did. #DUVALDIDDY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR76QJPSJQ0

The city of Jacksonville, FL (Duval County in particular) is just a weird, but wonderful place to live and grow up, and despite all of the craziness I'm glad to call it home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
