In today’s society and the up-and-coming generation, tattoos are transitioning from taboo to normalized. On a college campus, chances are high that someone you run into will have some ink etched into their skin, whether you can see it or not. If you’re not against tattoos, you most likely have one or are interested in getting one. Here are some things you should know before you go under the needle.
1. Your artist is a wealth of information and you should always ask their opinion on a design
Of course, it’s your body so you have the final say. But before you get that sick design you printed off the internet, ask your artist what they think. They may have an idea that you like better that incorporates your design into something original that no one else will have. At the very least, get something drawn up and stenciled - you can always wash a stencil off if you don’t like their idea.
2. Everyone has a different pain tolerance
Don’t expect your experience of pain levels to mirror that of your friend; everyone perceives pain differently. Time and placement also factor into the amount of pain you might feel.
3. Don't be afraid to take breaks
There’s nothing wrong with taking pauses in the process. Tell your artist you need a 10-minute break after an hour if you need one. You’ll both benefit, you can get some water and a snack, and your artist can rest their hand for a bit.
4. It doesn't have to be sentimental
Always remember that it’s your body. If you want something very sentimental that you hold dear to your heart, great. If you want to get something because it’s funny or just looks cool, go for it. Just because it’s going to be on you forever (unless you get it removed or covered up), it does not mean that you have to follow someone else’s guidelines for it.
5. People will feel entitled to comment
Even though it is your body and your business, people will nonetheless feel the need to give you negative opinions. That’s just how it is; if your placement is visible normally, you just have to learn to shrug it off.
6. You don't have to go to an artist just because your friend recommended them
You should always go to an artist that you’re comfortable with and whose style you like. Cleanliness and friendliness are also musts. Make sure that you do your research on a shop and artist before you get a tattoo done by them.

7. Tip your artist!
This dude just spent two hours in your personal space giving you custom art that will last a lifetime. Show them a little love, they deserve it!
8. It's addicting
Once you get one tattoo, be prepared for the random tattoo cravings you’ll be having a month later. Like potato chips, one is never enough.
